Intro.
First I have to say that I am fortunate that I get to live in the city of Montreal where there is their amazing Show held here every single year and where speaker manufacturer showcase their latest release. This review will be quick since I only got to listen to them for about 15 minutes. THe DM were hooked up to an all in one integrated Amplifiers which included hard drive and music library browser. A T+A Receiver. What I have to say is the overall is pleasant to the eye and just as pleasant to the ears. The finish is flawless and is as good as it gets for a 2K pair of speakers. The DM3/7 is a nice tower using 2x7 inch drivers with a soft dome tweeter, with the classic 1rst order x-over design well known from Dynaudio. The listening I have been able to hear several types of music on them and the result was quite consistant altho the speaker does not bring as much fun factors as some others I will say that it's very well balance despite it's great ability to reproduce bass, it has absolutely phenominal bass coming from a speaker in this price range the and the highs never exagarated. The tonal difference between the DM and the Excites is not so big but I do believe the Excites are a little more revealing and catches slightly more details and definition in the mids and highs . So basically they are also neautral leaning towards the warmer side of the spectrum. I like this speaker because I truly feel it will never fatigue the ear on a long extended period of listening. Therr are many other speakers in that price range to choose from, it this will depend on musical style preferences and all, but there is nothing to hate about this speaker, although it does nothing completely out of ordinary, I have to say tat it has no noticeable weaknesses and always sounds very musical and the music always seems to flow nicely, they have this great ability to disapear during the audition. And if you are an audiophile type of person and looking to fill a quite large room without breaking the bank I have to say that this DM 3/7 deserve serious consideration. Being a Totem fan I think I would pick the Sttaf ahead of it for 2 channel rig but if I would be looking at filling a little larger room I think I would go for the DM 3/7. ![]() I can't say they actually sound spectacular really but truly they sound very good with good details but it wont throw you off your chair some people will argue they seem to lack in the mids but I think the balance is there to tell you the truth, another speaker that may sound boring to some listeners but when you actually take the time to listen carefully it truly enjoyable and very musical. I said it some speakers have more fun factor but it really depends on your needs and what you like most. Last edited by BigAl87; 05-30-2011 at 08:10 PM. |

its 5:20 am,
for the last 2 nights my son has been up with a fever and screaming like he has never done before..... my wife took him to the Emergency room a little bit ago.... hopefully its really nothing serious. We have no idea why this is happening... sometimes he wont nurse either, so that has us worried, and he always sleeps thru the night. So yeah, its early, Im tired. |

FWIW, he is perfectly fine........ which makes no sense because of how docile the child is, and how much he cried, hsyterically, all night.... who knows.

My current set up consists of an onkyo 706 avr, oppo 95 on the way. I want to replace my 3 year old energy c100 bookshelf's with the focus 140's. I have been eyeing the onkyo 3008 for a long time. I've read good things about the 140's.
I currently have a 5.1 set up with all energy's and a veladyne sub. I plan on staying with the 5.1 set up due to room space and layout. Music listening/movie watching are 50/50 ratio. I have never delved into the pre amp set up, and am not sure if I need to be. Room dimensions are approx 10'x17' with one side opening of 11'. Ceiling is about 8'. Music volumes from low to loud at any given time. Jazz, blues, rock and metal. .Questions . . . Would the onkyo 3008, by it self, be enough to power and appreciate the 140's in 5.1? I have a onkyo 804 in the closet. Would it be possible to use that together with my 706 as a amp/pre amp set up? (i hope I got the terminology correct) or would the onkyo 3008 be sufficient by itself? Thanks |

The Onkyo 3008 pulls a lot of current, and because of that should be ok to power the Focus 140s. Even with a 4 ohm rating on the 140s, they have a linear impedance curve that stays flat and above 4 ohms throughout almost the entire frequency bandwidth. So you should be fine with the 3008. However you could keep your 706 and buy an external amp with the same money. Have you considered that? What other speakers are you going to have paired with the 140s? I was hoping to move my energy c100's to the surround until I could afford another set of 140's or perhaps 110's for the for the surrounds.
I have never used a pre amp set up before. However, that would probably be a cheaper route if I paired a power amp with the 706? Although, if you think the 3008 would power the 140's, I would other that route due too cabinet space, as well as other features I like on the 3008. I still definitely need to replace my energy c-c100 center speaker as well. Im sure a matching focus series won't be cheap, as I haven't researched a focus center speaker. |
