‘Boondock Saints’ Television Series in the Works; Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus to Reprise Roles

Despite an initially awful reception both critically (19% on Rotten Tomatoes) and commercially ($30,471 domestic total gross), Troy Duffy‘s The Boondock Saints has become a huge cult hit over the past several years — enough to spawn a sequel in 2009, a comic book in 2010, and a documentary about Duffy in 2003. Now the Irish vigilantes may be getting a television series as well.

During an interview with We Got This Covered, Duffy revealed that he’s been in talks with executives about a potential series based on his films. No network has picked up the series yet, but Duffy indicated that the show would be on a channel like HBO or AMC. Indeed, in order to stay faithful to the films, the series would have to be on cable — the cursing and violence that comprise like 99% of the film would never fly on broadcast television. And yes, stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery are expected to reprise their roles.

Here’s Duffy’s exact quote about the potential series:

Right off the bat, I’m a tad skeptical that there’s enough depth to the characters or setting to sustain an ongoing television series without getting repetitive — but of course, it’s way too early to jump to conclusions. There’s no telling how Duffy might expand on the brothers and their universe when he has twenty hours of television to film instead of just two hours of a movie. At any rate, it seems like a good bet that the series’ll have a built-in fanbase. If Duffy can manage to keep the elements that fans love while adding enough interest to draw audiences back from week to week, a Boondock Saints series could do fairly well.

Even though I was disappointed in the sequel, I think it could work. A cable season though, like 12 episodes.

i don't get the fascination with this "franchise". so many other, better franchises that could work as a tv series

I'm working on getting an Armageddon TV series where something different is on a collision course with earth every week like a comet, a runaway moon and Unicron. But the heart and soul will be variations of asteroids, like one made of chocolate or one that has dinosaurs living on it.

Armageddon isn't a franchise, but by all means, get that show up and running!

That's my feeling on the show as well. Since Transporter is becoming a series as well, I'm wondering if the TV executives came to him. Looking for more action shows probably and are looking at popular franchises to do it with. It would make a lot of sense. It all honesty, I'd rather we just got a third movie. But hey, at least we'll get a conclusion to the story.

Yeah I'm guessing with Transporter becoming a TV series it had something to do with making this into a series. Could also be becuase cable is becoming the real deal now with quality and popular shows with True Blood, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Mad Men etc and we don't have a lot of action type shows on cable like this.

Awesome, as long as they do it good with many violent scenes and bad language like the movies. Didn't really like the sequel, I thought the ending of that one was the best part. If they start of from there it could be a real interesting TV show.

I never thought a TV show for Terminator could work, but that one was awesome. So I hope the same will happen for this "franchise"

If Norman drops The Walking Dead in favor of this it'll be a huge mistake. TWD did so well in it's first season and has the longevity to make sense for 5+ seasons.

This just seems like the rights owners are grasping at straws to make money any way they can. The first movie was a triumph (I personally don't like it but I'll admit it) the second by all reviews was atrocious. Don't soil the first further with a meaningless tv show.

The walking dead is a pretty short season. Unless they changed it to 22 eps a season, I think he could do both shows. And on the walking dead, it's pretty easy to write a character of the show, just let him be eaten by a zombie.

This season is supposedly going to be 13 episodes last I read. The problem I have with it is "writing him off" early so he can be a main character on the BS show (yeah, that abbreviation WILL stick) would cause a great show to lose a great character for the chance that this show would work. (It won't go past 1 season if it happens, mark my words).

The movie worked. The second didn't. Stretching it out even longer (minimum 13 episodes cable, 22 broadcast) will sour the franchise forever.

EDIT: Reading further, being HBO/Showtime would basically be a death warrant. There may well be a Boondock Saint fan base already, but convincing them to pay $15 a month to watch the show is a whole different story. Premium channels expect MEGA rating (2+ million on a steady basis) or they'll cut it.

I don't see it as meaningless. Whether people liked the sequel or not, it ended on a pretty big cliffhanger that needs to be resolved. As I said, I'd much rather just see a third movie. But the chance that they'll get to finish the story off as a show isn't so bad either, especially if it's on AMC or HBO. It'll give it breathing room, and maybe we'll get more character development and such out of it. I'm holding out hope it'll work.

Troy Duffy Updates on 'Boondock Saints 3', As Well as Potential TV Series

It’s been some time since we heard about that potential The Boondock Saints sequel, but don’t think that means director Troy Duffy has forgotten all about it.

Duffy described the new script as “more introspective,” adding that he “couldn’t be more pleased with how it’s turning out.” Stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery remain set to return, and Duffy hopes he can get Willem Dafoe back as well.

Meanwhile, for those who prefer their vigilante justice on a smaller screen, Duffy also confirmed that the rumored TV series was “still on the hopper.”

‘A BOONDOCK SAINTS Prequel Series Is in the Works

After years of attempts to get another Boondock Saints sequel off the ground, writer-director Troy Duffy is trying a different tactic to bring back the MacManus twins. Duffy is set to write and direct a TV prequel series based on his cult hit films. Stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery won’t star, but may serve as co-executive producers.

Deadline reports IM Global Television has acquired the TV rights to The Boondock Saints. Duffy, who wrote and directed both 1999’s The Boondock Saints and 2009’s The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day has written and will direct the first episode. He’s already compiled a series bible, which chronicles the MacManus boys’ origins as Irish immigrants in South Boston.

Duffy will additionally executive produce with Don Carmody, Lloyd Segan, and D. Matt Geller, all of whom had a hand in the original films. Reedus and Flanery are in early talks to join the project as co-executive producers. The search for a showrunner is already in progress.

Released in 1999, the original Boondock Saints was a critically panned commercial failure until word of mouth made it a cult hit on home video. The film became popular enough to beget a sequel in 2009… which didn’t really do any better at the box office or among critics. Still, Boondock Saints has a devoted following, and Duffy has long worked to get a third installment off the ground.

As of last fall the word was Boondock Saints III had a title and a story, but we haven’t heard much about forward movement since then. Interestingly, Duffy revealed at the time that Boondock Saints 3: Legion would include flashbacks to the brothers’ “very first crime.” Now it seems that backstory is being repurposed for the TV show.

“For years I’ve been obsessed with telling a real origin story with Boondock, and IM Global TV has stepped up,” said Duffy. “Television is the perfect medium to explore these controversial characters on a much deeper level and to bring Boondock Saints to a whole new audience.”

The Boondock Saints TV series does not yet have a home, but producers are said to be aiming for a straight-to-series order.

BOONDOCK SAINTS TV SERIES IN DEVELOPMENT

The 1999 vigilante flick The Boondock Saints is being revived as a TV series titled The Boondock Saints: Origins.

Don Carmody Television (DCTV) has joined up with The Boondock Saints creator Troy Duffy to bring the Saints to the small screen. DCTV and Duffy have also launched a 'fan-focused pre-order campaign' which will allow fans to pre-order the series on digital download and DVD, as well as gain exclusive access to behind-the-scenes content, merchandise, and a limited edition subscription box. The announcement follows Duffy's first attempt at spinning his franchise into a prequel TV series back in 2015.

The Boondock Saints centered around two brothers (Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery) who become vigilantes after killing a Russian mob member in self-defense. Although it wasn't met with a warm critical reception, it went on to become a beloved cult classic. A sequel was released in 2009.

“A television series is the perfect medium for story telling inside the world of our beloved blue collar super heroes. The brothers have always been defenders of the people, justice, fairness and the city of Boston”, said Duffy in a press release. “In this sensitive time of human rights unrest, government scandal and civil corruption, there couldn’t be a better moment to re-launch the brothers iconic brand of justice in the Cradle of Democracy”.
