Well Frodo's shirt should look white but I don't think the hobbits teeth should look white. Those filthy hobbitses don't brush their teeth!

The funny thing is that the LOTR trilogy used mild, subtle tinting and colors very, very well when those methods were 'blowing up' after movies like The Matrix and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (the latter used tinting very well also).

I think we should have had a official response by now, either by Peter Jacksons facebook page or a statement on official website to say the new colour grading was intended and correct.

The silence makes me believe that a error has occured.

Still i have never purchased LOTR trilogy on any format so will still be buying and will be using the disc replacement method *IF* that happens.

Agreed: A response by now would have been great. I realize the guy is busy, but a quick "yes, this was my intention" or "no, something got messed up" would not take much time to reveal.

Jackson's approval or disapproval would really serve as the 'be all, end all' for much debate.

Part of a case for intention:
-The video at 4:30 and 6:30 show their green intentions. Capping it off a scene altered from white clothes, then Jackson 11:00-11:40.
-One of the most common words in the book is grey.

The specific quote he posted is 3:45 into that, but the whole thing is good.

Surprise!!! A teal tint! The RGB value of the color on Frodo's shirt is Red: 178, Green: 195, Blue: 168. DEFINITELY a greenish tint.

I repeated the same process on a hobbit tooth. The red arrow points to the tooth I sampled.

I don't think it's as cut and dried as that, Mr Red Pill Sir. I know that in today's online world an answer to a question is demanded yesterday, but if this is a proper balls-up then Jackson & Lesnie are gonna need some time to sit down, watch the Blu-ray properly (i.e. to not rely on screencaps and youtube videos) and take it from there.

But there's that pesky matter of them, y'know, making a multi-million dollar movie at the moment. And if this was a mistake, then they'll probably insist on viewing the master (again) AND the final encode just to make sure. This will all take time.

I paused the fireworks video clip at two appropriate spots and grabbed two stills, one showing Frodo's shirt and the other showing the hobbit's teeth near the end of the video. I then brought those clips into Photoshop and sampled the "white" of Frodo's shirt and the "white" of a hobbit's tooth. I had Photoshop's color picker/sample tool set to display true white (255, 255, 255) in the "current" spot in the tool. Then I placed the cursor over a "white" area on Frodo's shirt and sampled the color. The color under the cursor then gets set in the "new" spot in the tool and the color values for that sample are shown in the dialog. The red arrow in the image points to the spot on Frodo's shirt where I took the color sample.
GREAT post!

Perhaps there is some plant life in middle earth that produces a putrid green pollen that contaminates/covers everything.

I still believe that the reason no statements are made is that Warner wants to get rid of the first batch of these discs before it. Worldwide there must be millions of them and recalling them all would cost someone's head for sure so that is certainly never going to happen, even if they should admit that an error was made.

Most people buying this would never know of a potential exchange and that clearly means making profit off >90% of the defective discs.

So it would be a huge surprise for me if any statement was made this month.

At least they left the theatrical cuts alone, as far as color.

This makes me feel a lot better about my decision to buy the theatrical cut Blu-rays, despite their flaws.

Well put. That's why I urge people to suspend or cancel their orders at least until we get an official word about this thing. I've waited a long time for the EE to be released, I can wait a little more...

I pre-ordered for $60, why would I cancel when I can just get the replacement when and IF an error occurred? If there is no error, then I keep them. Win-win.

Guess I'm still buying the individual Theatricals first then the Extended boxset, which in fact I was planning to do all along, regardless of the colour change. If there's a disc exchange plan it's fine but I really don't see what the big griping is about.
Still not buying the Extended Edition boxset right away due to other reasons possibly previously mentioned in this and other threads. One of those reasons I'm going to appreciate and is a far greater priority.

You're a LotR fan who has never seen the EEs? Man, do I envy you--you're in for a treat! ( ugly green tint notwithstanding.)

Peter Jackson won't issue a statement until it's cleared by WarnerBrother's legal department.

WB's Legal Department is made up of Human Beings, who have usually have weekends off (there would be a small subset of members who would be oncall for actual emergencies, but this wouldn't qualify as an emergency to WB).

A statement will more than likely not occur until after the product's release date. If there is a problem, once it's been acknowledged the company would be obligated to fix it, but just announcing it could lead to decreased sales. If there is not a problem and a statement is made, the small vocal minority wouldn't change their stance and continue telling everyone to boycott. Thus the odds of actually getting a statement are pretty slim.

In addition, the general masses probably would never notice the "issue". We've had at least 5 well-respected (or at least respected) reviewers complete reviews of these films. Pretty sure the general assessment has been that overall the tint isn't an issue and that the level of detail and picture quality (what the general masses will notice first) are extreme improvements.

Also, if/when a disc exchange program was offered -- WB would only need to swap out 2 discs (FotR Part 1 and Part 2), since there seems be a pretty general agreement that TT and RotK are 'fine'.

Here is another DVD/BD comparison. Although I'm always uncomfortable with film revisionism, I can't deny the change is an improvement. I always felt the saturation was too intense in Rivendell.

I still have issues with the look of Fellowship. It just looks too much like a storybook. The Two Towers is the best looking film in the trilogy; it looks less flashy and more real.

Yep, the colors, especially here, look 100x better. The theatrical is murky and flat looking with magenta. And, agree, TTT is the best looking of the 3, and the only film of the 3 which I really like.

The only film you like? 1 out of 3 and you are paying 60+ for the set?

Yes. The EEs are far better than the theatricals though. But I also buy for my collection, and I'm sure family members or other people who also watch my films like them better than I do, so they are good to own.

In fact, I didn't even see ROTK in theaters. I just didn't care.
