"For the theatrical release on Blu-ray, Warner used a digital master taken from a release print, but for the extended edition, Jackson wanted to rescan the original elements to get the most visual detail and clarity, and them retime the color for home viewing, adjusting the brightness, intensity and hues to best effect on TV monitors. So while "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King" were mastered from the same source as previous release, "The Fellowship of the Ring" was not."
This is the only dude I have seen say that... WB has issued a statement saying that the new master is from the original 2k files... this dude must have just been pulling something out of his @$$... not true.

I guess VLC Media player is doing something it shouldn't, because every screen I take of a DVD the resolution is 853x480. And when I use video encoders to make portable copies of my DVDs, the same resolution is used for 1.77:1 videos and 853x352 for 2.40:1 videos. For those, I use the h264 codec, which is what the iTunes digital copies use.

Here's a screenshot. I have not manipulated VLC Media Player in any way.

Having watched the first 30 minutes of the Fellowship of the Ring, I see where the arguments and discussions originated from but I just don't get why it even started.

This thing looks stunning. Absolute money, in my eyes. Just gorgeous.

I believe this has to do with the "Anamorphic" DVD pixel ratio. Rectangle Pixels are compressed (into Squares, or almost squares) to fit the 720x480 ratio on a DVD. Then when you play it on a widescreen TV or your VLC media player, it is displaying the original rectangle pixels.

I agree. Hobbiton looks amazing.

As for the following blurb from the High Def Digest review of Fellowship:

Quote:
Gandalf first knocks on Bilbo's door, as that shot looks the same on this release as it would if you watched the Theatrical Blu-ray wearing sunglasses, and that isn't even an exaggeration.
It's utter nonsense. A tree blocks some of the sun and not much light is getting through anyway due to Bag End's location.

It would be nice to know why these changes, if intentional, were just applied to FOTR.

Yeah. It's anamorphic. That's why the resolution is what it is on the digital copy.

Just received my Amazon exclusive Box set with the ring replica and all I can say so far is 'AWESOME'. I love the packaging and the transfers are also great.

Close enough, but technically it is the 720 x 480 anamorphic video that has non-square (rectangular) pixels. 853 x 480 would be the corresponding square-pixel resolution. (actually 853.33333, but you can't have a fraction of a pixel!)

Just got back from Best Buy with my Set, cost $64.99, had a BB coupon, but my Best Buy had a ton of the version with the figurines, I just could not get myself to get that one, no use for all those tiny figurines LOL.

So just to be sure, does this new Set contain everything that the big DVD box sets of the EE's had? just trying to see if there is a reason to hang to them is all.

Thanks

As I expected, when people actually got the product and watched it with their own eyes the OTT arguments crumble to dust.

Still debating on whether or not I wanna drop $70 on this today, or wait for it to go down.

I've never seen any of the LOTR movies, but I figured I would get this and just take a day out and watch all of them.

I just don't know

New here, been following the whole situation. Got my set this morning and have watched FotR, TTT and am working on RotK now. Honestly, I think FotR may look the best out of all three of them to me. There are MOMENTS where I'm like, eh that looks too green, but NOTHING comes close to my "Are you kidding me?" reactions from some of those dreadful screenshots.

Obviously those who will compare thing sside by side and stuff will see some color things they don't like, but if you go into it just trying to appreciate it for what it is you will find an extremely detailed transfer. It's a pity some people won't buy just because of what they think the FotR transfer will be like.

Also, my favorite packaging out of all my Blu-Rays. Sturdy, great artwork, three seperate cases, and the invisible magnet to hold things together.

The point I've been trying to make during this whole discussion is, yeah, the green tint likely isn't bothersome in practice, but would it be more impressive if it had all the present resolution, but the brighter and more neutral color scheme of the other 2 films? Using the TE as a frame of reference is hardly fair, since it was pretty much shoddy all around.
