If you haven't had your Sony calibrated to eliminate its red push the FOTR EE will have less green tint on your TV but other movies will be too red.

Are you refering to the Sony LCDs?

I own an SXRD (60A3000) and there was no red push even before getting it ISF calibrated. I used to own a Sony CRT RPTV, as well. It had more of a blue push out of the box, but that was easily calibrated out.

Now, my set does have a slight green primary over-saturation which should make this green/teal situation in the movie interesting. However, my grayscale is very flat or neutral, so it shouldn't be too bad.

I might pick this up Sunday if Best Buy will let me use my 10% off coupon on it.

Maybe not, but the $5 coupon that has been floating around should work fine.

I just downloaded my digital copy of FOTR EE from the iTunes store. It does NOT have the green tint. Nor did I expect it to. It is perfectly logical that Warner would use the DVD EE transfer for the digital copies since the digital copies are not high def. The digital copy was probably already on Apple's servers.

Curious why the new rage in terms of complaining is now about "black crush" when nearly every review out there either doesn't mention it at all, or says it's slightly there but not an issue and we only lose fringe details.

If I hadn't looked at reviews, I'd swear every dark scene was overun black crush. *shrugs*

YMMV, but they would not let me use the $5 coupon as the set is "on sale".

So, has no one else seen the shadow smearing/ghosting on Frodo's & Gandalf's closeups at the beginning of FoTR disc 2?

I think you're confusing color decoder errors with color temperature. Sony sets run cool in the temperature department, which gives them the blue look you were seeing. To compensate, they push the red up in the color decoder so that flesh-tones don't have a pallor.

This thread has really evolved into arguing about color temperatures of overpriced televisions? Anything to try and escape that OMG GREEN TINT "issue", am I right?

On my SXRD, I don't recall there being any color decoding issues out of the box, but I admit it's been fours years so maybe I have forgotten.

Okay, that makes sense on the CRT RPTV regarding the blue.

Default Will the price drop or go up first?

For a topic that isn't about the color green. Does anyone think the price of this thing will stay at $69.99 and gradually go down or will it spike back up to the $100's and not return to $69.99 and lower till christmas?

My guess is that it will stay around $70 until closer to the holidays.

Depends on the sales volume this week. It's hard to see it below 59.99 before Labor Day.

Lets say they tried a blanket filter in 2001. It didn't work with the partial (70%) regrade. With the 100% regrade, it does "work". Is that a plausible explanation?

Not really because it quite clearly doesn't 'work'. The only reason it may 'work' for you and many others is that your eyes are adapting to the constant green tint and making what once looked white white again, like snow and the fade to white which has now become the fade to green if you look at the screencaps which btw are 100% accurate.

I dare anybody that thinks otherwise to post up a screencap of the 'fade to white' before frodo wakes up in rivendell from their own blu-ray. Not a photo, a screencap captured correctly, like the ones in Ken's review that clearly show the green tint affecting the colours in every single screencap.

When you say "many others" you are also including Peter Jackson in that group?

It works for me because Middle Earth is a mythic place. It is not reality. The color shift adds to that perception.

As far as i'm aware, Peter Jackson hasn't made a statement saying the constant green tint running throughout the fotr ee blu-ray was his intent.

All i've heard is a PR statement from Warner saying the new colour grading is intended by Peter Jackson, which is of course a very cleverly phrased half truth because nobody is contesting that PJ intended the colour changes once the green tint is removed.

I've seen that film with the green tint removed (having regraded it myself) and it looks fantastic, all his colour changes are clearly intentional and they 'work'.

The constant green tint however does not and I believe it to be an error by Warner that they're not willing to own up to due to the financial costs of providing replacements.

Seeing the amount of people willing to accept this new green tinted fotr and explain it away as 'intentional', I can see why. Why spend part of their profits from this premium priced set fixing a problem when so many people think there is no problem. Might as well keep all the profit for themselves. As a business, they are only concerned with maximising profit, i'd do exactly the same thing in their situation. It's up to us as the consumer to call them up on it, like we did with the original gladiator blu-ray and the theatrical blu-ray of fotr.

$5 coupon worked for me. Worth a shot.
