Senso finally came in the mail! I'm watching it right now. The mail carrier was delivering the mail just as I stopped in to the super boxes to get the mail for my parents, as I'm house sitting while they're away.

Edit: I couldn't wait until next week, as I really want Pierrot le Fou, and so many others want it. I ordered it, along with Gimme Shelter and Night of the Hunter, which technically made Pierrot le Fou free. However, once tax and shipping is applied, and I split the total by 3, each Blu-Ray came to about 28.36, which is pretty decent. B&N have cheaper shipping to Canada than Amazon!

Also, anyone else find Senso to have a yellow-greenish tint to it? I think the whole debate on FOTR is causing me to see supposed tints on my films now, although Senso's really been the only one that appears to be tinted. Could just be my parents' tv, and/or my desktop, as I'm not using my usual playback setup.

I'm looking at 3 titles specifically, "The Great Dictator", "Solaris" and "Kiss me Deadly". However, since this sale is going to run for a month, there is plenty of time to save up for one or two more.

Does pre-orders count in this sale?

I hadn't started it then, just put the disc in. Also, it's paused right now because the dogs wanted out, and I wanted to check to see if anyone else found the tint to be excessively yellowish-green.

Here's my sale list:

Definite buys:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (I sold my Universal disc in anticipation for this release/sale)
Naked (Amazing movie, Thewlis delivers one of the all-time great performances, perhaps too brutal and nihilistic for repeat viewings though)

Considering:
Beauty and the Beast (I didn't care for it when I saw it, but maybe it's time for a reappraisal? - probably won't get it)
Diabolique (Blind buy)
High & Low (Great movie, but it's lengthy and I don't know about rewatchability)
Kiss Me Deadly (Blind buy)

And I'm sure there's a crap load of other stuff I'll be tempted with before the sale is over.

I watched Senso last week and I didn't notice anything strange. I've never seen the film before, so I had nothing to compare it to and had no reason to look for a tint.
Is there is a specific scene or shot you noticed this in, or was it the whole film?

Sure, you can get all kinds of stuff off the internet, but I like having these booklets.
Also, and this might seem silly, but the booklet adds physical weight to the blu-ray package, which seems to add to its aesthetic weight. When you pull it off the shelf, it feels solid and important in your hands, instead of cheap and flimsy like so many blu-ray packages.
Yes, i forgot about the booklets. They are a big part of what makes Criterion releases so special. The booklet for Sweet Smell of Success was really cool, but my favorite has to be the "newspaper" that is included with Ace in the Hole. (I would love to get a Blu-ray upgrade for that film)

Okay, so I know the sale starts on the 12th, but in going through this thread I haven't seen anyone say how long it lasts. Does anyone know when it ends? I'm definitely making a trip to the nearest B&N the first week of the sale, but I get paid again the week after that and I'd like to make a return trip, if possible. I've been eagerly awaiting this sale ever since last November, when I was jobless and couldn't buy anything, so I'd really like to get the biggest bang for my buck. Right now, I'm looking at picking up:

GIMME SHELTER
THE THIN RED LINE
SHOCK CORRIDOR
THE GREAT DICTATOR
PATHS OF GLORY
AMERICA: LOST AND FOUND
YOJIMBO/SANJURO
THE LEOPARD
DAYS OF HEAVEN
BREATHLESS
WINGS OF DESIRE
PARIS, TEXAS

And honestly, there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to get all of those, and I'm sure I left off a few. Here's hoping they do a repeat of last year's November sale.

The whole film. The whites look like lemon-lime geen/yellow or orangy, and skin tones look excessively red/orange. Like I said, it could be the TV I'm watching it on (older LG LCD with fewer settings to adjust the picture with), and/or the fact that I'm using my computer, rather than my SA player. The subs are white though. It could be intentional, and I'm now overthinking tints in all my films because of the issue with FOTR and people arguing about that.

Edit: It was an issue with my BD software, It had automatically applied a green tint and oversaturated the film.

I was wondering the same thing myself. In fact I honestly don't know how people found what day the sale is because I have seen any sort of advertising or anything.

They began delivering last week though! I still have a monoprice order and an Amazon UK order MIA though, that were both ordered long before the order I got today! So weird. This one was sent the day the lockout began. At least I have Senso now.

I hope Ace In The Hole gets released on Blu, too. It was one of the best blind buys I made on DVD.

I asked the employee and he told me the sale was from July 12th - Aug 2nd. Whoever is right I think it's safe to say the sale will last for 3 weeks. I hope so cause I have about 10-12 titles I want and need to space them out a little.

It must be at least 8 month since I've bought my last Criterion, but the BN sale what I was waiting for. What I plan to get :

Seven Samurai
Amarcord
The Naked Kiss
Shock Corridor
Solaris
Naked
Au revoir les enfants
Yi Yi
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
The Thin Red Line
Paths Of Glory
Fish Tank
Blow Out
Zazie dans le métro

Most are blind buys to me, though I don't know if 2 Samuel Fuller's flicks would be too much but I can't decide on which one I want more. I'm thinking of replacing one of the two by Beauty & The Beast, but still unsure.

THIS! I caught it on TCM a few years back, and thought it was fantastic! Kirk Douglas is totally awesome anyways.

I think I may end up buying a couple more BDs if this sale really is going on until August, as I want some Kurosawa on BD now. I watched Rashomon the other day and thought it was fantastic, and look forward to seeing more of his films.

Senso was great, although not as great as The Leopard, despite the issues I had with Arcsoft tinting everything lemon-lime green. I'm sure it will look gorgeous once I watch it again on my Panasonic. I'll probably do a double feature of Senso/The Leopard, since they occur during the same time period in Italian history, and are by the same director. They're such beautiful films; the costumes, the scenery, and the stories are fantastic.

+1.

I love how cynical Wilder gets with Ace in the Hole. There's not a scrap of sentimentality.

One of the titles I'm considering for the sale is The Seventh Seal but I already own Criterion's DVD release. It's one of my favorite films and I'm wondering if the upgrade in PQ justifies owning the Blu as well (I know there are many more SS viewings in my future).. if someone has owned both versions and wants to chime in that would be great.

On a semi related note, I really wish Criterion would release Bergman's "Faith Trilogy" on Blu.

I personally do not like The Seventh Seal at all but I love having it in my collection as the image quality is incredible. If it is one of your favorites then don't hesitate to upgrade.
