Tell us how you really feel Foggy!

I was tempted to blind buy it, but held off. May pick it up when it hits 10 otherwise I'll rent it sooner or later and check it out. Not a huge fan of Snyder. I don't dislike him and while I enjoy most of what he does (especially visually and set design wise) he's yet to make something I love or think is great.

[Show spoiler]gives herself up to have sex with the high roller and (as Zack Snyder said he wanted it) enjoys it

And it always looses me that she
[Show spoiler]imagined she is stuck in a brothel to re-live everything shes done in that previous week just so she can go through her crazy fantasies

And I don't understand when people say it's a good metal institution drama, half the girls are quite lame actresses, and you really only get to know 3 of the girls, the other 2 are as expendable as you can get.

It feels like a mess when you watch it, and the more I think of it, the more I hate, I came out of it digging half the ideas it portrayed, I just found the overall product hard to watch, but all those good ideas seem to lesser in my memory and the overwhelming disappointment just floods all enjoyment I can think of in the film.
Can't really say who or what the
[Show spoiler]wise old man
represents. And there's probably no good reason as to why
[Show spoiler]only one of the girls survived
. It could just be mere plot convenience. It might apply to the themes at the end concerning life and stuff, especially
[Show spoiler]with the tacked-on theme of sacrifice
. I dunno.

I went through this movie assuming that whatever dance these girls did mirrored the fantasy segments (we never got to see the dances, just the fantasy part), so I assume that whatever fetishes are in the segments are also somehow applied to the dances. Therefore, all of the sexy costumes, weapon play, violence, imagery, etc must have been portrayed in the dance to appease the audience (including the film's audience), serving the necessary distraction (for both the characters and us). I figure it's all part of the movie's overall plot and theme.

I read some of the misogyny in the film, and I'm not really seeing it. The male characters are misogynystic, so the women kick their butts. Good for them. For all that goes,
[Show spoiler]since most of the movie is in the main character's head, a lot of this male aggression could just be a manifestation of her fears; there's no evidence that the cook or the mayor or anybody else was really that mean, just the one orderly
. At any rate, I thought there was plenty of empowerment; it's not like the girls just sat there and took their abuse, they tried to do something about it, and they fought back on occasion. I think of the women were helpless and the men lorded over them in the end, it really would have been misogynistic.

Ultimately, in thinking about the misogyny, I'm not getting why a movie like "Charlie's Angels" can show women kicking men's butts for no good reason and be acceptable, while "Sucker Punch" shows women standing up to abusive men and be considered offensive. "CA" is full of fetishes, while "SP" uses the fetishes to show just how dumb/wrong/shallow it all is. So shouldn't "CA" and other similar movies get more criticism for this kind of thing?

Not that I care anyway; all these movies rock.

At any rate, I can understand people thinking of "Sucker Punch" as a mess. But I've seen much messier movies. Like "Inland Empire;" now that's...something...

No worries. It sounds like the movie flopped when it first came out, so lots of people didn't like it.

Yep, better rent it, see for yourself.

It's probably the strangest film I've ever seen. I reviewed it a while ago; if you get to see it, it'll be interesting seeing what you think of it.

Incidentally, I kept thinking of David Lynch and David Conenberg when I was watching "Sucker Punch"...

Umm….yeah…okay…it’s interesting as a film (interesting cameramanship, and some scenes scared the crap out of me), but it’s pretty darn long and slow, and jam-loaded with scenes that make absolutely no sense. I don’t think I can ever interpret this film’s plot, much less articulate it.

The following smilie shall represent my overall feelings about this film:

3/5 (entertainment: 3/5, story: NA, film: 3.5/5)

Yep, a lot of people didnt like it because they didnt get it. They only looked at the visuals for face value and didnt pay attention to the story THE WAY IT WAS TOLD and then, to me, missed the obvious message and themes of empowerment.

Al's two paragraphs here

discuss what most people missed, or interpreted BACKWARDS.

The girls used the mens
[Show spoiler]weakness (horniness)
against them to achieve their goal, which was to
[Show spoiler]escape the evil, violent, currupt PIGS.

The dances were
[Show spoiler]Trojan Horses in reverse. Designed to escape rather than enter, and the men, blinded by the lust, were fooled.

I blind-bought it because I enjoy Synder's visual style. Hoping I will like this one. Ga'Hoole was pretty average, but as some of you know, barn owls are my thing.

Thanks fo the Sucker Punch review Al_The_Strange. Really wanted to watch this when it first came out, but I didn't get a chance .

Blu-ray's out now(or very soon) but I think I'll wait for it to drop. Might give it a rent after reading this though .

Horrible Bosses

Year: 2011
Director: Seth Gordon
Writers: Michael Markowitz, John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein
Starring: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston & Colin Farrell

comedy is a tough genre to talk about and recommend. it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and what some people find hilarious, others find obnoxious, shallow, dumb and are turned off by it. also, the subject matter of some comedies can make some people tense up, never laugh and make a 90 minute joyride excruciatingly painful.

so, how does one recommend a comedy?
you really can't. but i'll do my best to not give anything away about Horrible Bosses while explaining why i loved it and hopefully this will either make you want to see it, or say, "you know what, this doesn't sound like something i'd like".

to be blunt - Horrible Bosses is hysterical. absolutely hilarious from start to finish. there was never a scene where i didn't have a gut busting laugh. i don't think 30 seconds ever passed without a great jokes or hilarious tidbit being thrown my way. it's definitely a film that i will have to watch numerous times to catch all the jokes that i missed because i was laughing.

so, what type of funny is Horrible Bosses? a very mixed bag of humor. DARK humor, mind you

the best part of Horrible Bosses is that the humor isn't very "visual". there aren't any (maybe one or two) visual gags that make you laugh. the laughs come from the genius writing and terrific performances of the masterful cast. there are, to my surprise, TONS of sexual innuendo jokes. i figured the "sexual harasser" Julia Harris (Aniston) would have these jokes, but many other characters also supply "gross out" dialogue humor. now, it's done in a "more adult" way that isn't just a simple dick or fart joke. it makes sense in the context of the film and never feels like it's there just to shock us or surprise us or to make us try and laugh. it fits and feels real

each character brings a separate type of comedy and humor to the film. Charlie Day plays Dale, who is the one being sexually harassed by Julia, his boss. of course, Aniston is GORGEOUS, so why is this a problem? because he's engaged. so, yeah, a problem. for some some i can see being annoyed by his constant comments and under the breath, almost fly by the seat of his pants dialogue. it's almost like he doesn't have a script. he's just saying whatever comes to mind. and 95% of it is sure genius. but his character is the one who "screws everything up".

Nick (Bateman) and Kurt (Sudeikis) are more of the "every man" for the audience and while kind of the same, Kurt provides the more goofy, sometimes childish humor (not bad or stupid though) and Nick is the more "adult" sophisticated one with smart, witty one-liners that i found hilarious. fans of The Office or Arrested Development will understand what type of humor he brings to the table. and it all meshes will.

people are already saying that this is "2011's The Hangover" but Horrible Bosses is so much better than The Hangover (imo, and i gave The Hangover a 4/5) and shouldn't be compared. however, i could see similiarities between Dale and Alan and Nick and Phil. it's inevitable, but that's where similarities end pretty much. oh, and also a wacky car chase / crash sequence.

only real complaint is that Colin Farrell doesn't have much screen time. he was awesome and i wanted to see more of him, but he has limited scenes. Kevin Spacey has the most screen time of the bosses, and i felt he had a bit too much, which of course should have gone to Farrell.

Aniston was smoking HAWT and she could make a movie of just her dialogue here that lasted 90 minutes and i would buy it in a heartbeat my god! her dialogue could be (and likely is in many) in any adult film. absolutely jaw dropping sexual references and innuendos galore. so awesome, hilarious and almost cringe worthy in a great way.

oddly enough, i was in an audience with about 15 other couples, 13 of which were over the age of 40, maybe more towards mid-50's! wasn't expecting that. and while they enjoyed it (some clapped at the end) and laughed heartily, during some of the adult heavy dialogue moments, they kind of got awkwardly nervous and tried to stay quiet while i seemed like the perverted young guy all the way up top by himself who was laughing out loud constantly at what was being said.

needless to say, the dialogue by Aniston (and at times some others) will make your mother blush and maybe even you

at 90 minutes, Horrible Bosses flies by. it moves at a brisk pace and never overstays its welcome. i was curious how the film would conclude and i was pleasantly surprised by how fitting it all wrapped up really no major complaints and aside from Farrell not having enough scenes, i can't fault it for anything. not perfect and not the best comedy ever or anything like that, but likely will be the funniest film of 2011. it made me laugh - constantly - and that's all i could ask for from a comedy. many classic lines of dialogue and gems to be found here. some you really gotta pay attention for

what more can i say? if you enjoyed the trailer, you'll enjoy the film. for sure and the best part? almost everything from the trailer is in the first 30 minutes or so! so that gives you another hour of fantastic material to enjoy.

day 1 pick up for me. can't wait to see it again

The Film: 4.5/5

That's a great paragraph. You are absolutely right. It's agony for me to watch the wrong kind of comedy (Little Man, Zohan).

Spacey can be very funny (American Beauty). Farrell too (In Bruges). I like Bateman in Juno. All three are talented actors who can deliver the kind of dark comedy I like. I'll have to check this out.

Mulholland Dr., Inland Empire and Lost Highway are all available in Germany and are region free.

$55 delivered (free shipping) and there's also a coupon worth about $8 for your first order.

I own the Region B UK version of Mulholland Dr. and I'm waiting for Lost Highway to arrive from Europe.

thanks Steve!

i completely agree. while my ability to enjoy comedy can pretty much reach from one extreme to another (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Fargo, American Beauty and then stuff like Strange Wilderness and Sex Drive still make me laugh quite a bit) some are just off-putting and if i am laughing, i'm laughing at how forced the jokes are - like Zohan

Horrible Bosses doesn't have any of that, which i adored
i think you'll enjoy it. Spacey is about as cynical and hateful as he ever could be and while he doesn't have a bunch of jokes, it's just the character itself and the reactions to him that get the laughs. at least, for me anyway.

i completely agree. while my ability to enjoy comedy can pretty much reach from one extreme to another (Fantastic Mr.

I like Spacey in almost anything. And you know I love Fargo and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

User review:

David Lynch Blu-Ray Box (Los Angeles Trilogy)

This box set showcases Lynch's unofficial trilogy that covers a journey through the afterlife, using the city of Los Angeles as a back drop. Each film has a distinct feel and tone, and they're all beautiful. I'll warn you right now; this isn't a box set to test the Lynchian waters....this is strictly for fans of David's work. If you haven't seen any Lynch films I would suggest renting one or two, if you have Netflix i know they like to switch up their Lynch collection (now they have Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart).

The video quality is amazing (for the most part). Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive look gorgeous in stunning 1080p, but David's latest film is much less than "High Def", but there's a reason. Unlike the first two films, Inland Empire wasn't shot on film, it was shot using a standard definition DV portable camera. David has commented that this was done to get a certain feel for the movie and I completely stand behind this decision. The way that this camera is used almost gives a more personal and intimate feeling when viewing; you feel as though you're watching it first hand, or maybe even that someone within the film is watching in some sort of abstract or celestial way (and it's brilliant). I would quickly like to mention that although it was shot in standard definition it still looks much more clear than the DVD release, this wasn't a lazy release by any means.

The audio quality is one of the hidden gems of these films. Lynch largely does his own sound design on his fims, and he proves himself a master....every subtle chirp or distant engine drone feels like it's in it's perfect place and sets the mood in a way that the film couldn't do on it's own.

Finally, the presentation is beautiful. The movies come in a thick cardboard slip box and each film is in it's own standard blu-ray case. The films don't have a title menu, they just start playing, but they do have very cleverly designed pop-up menus that feature everything from on the fly audio changing from German to English to scene selection to special features.

If you love David Lynch's work this is a MUST have. It doesn't look like this will be coming out state-side anytime soon (unfortunately) so you should do yourself a favor and buy this through Amazon.de, it's completely worth the wait.

comedy is a tough genre to talk about and recommend. it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and what some people find hilarious, others find obnoxious, shallow, dumb and are turned off by it. also, the subject matter of some comedies can make some people tense up, never laugh and make a 90 minute joyride excruciatingly painful.
[Show spoiler]
so, how does one recommend a comedy?
you really can't. but i'll do my best to not give anything away about Horrible Bosses while explaining why i loved it and hopefully this will either make you want to see it, or say, "you know what, this doesn't sound like something i'd like".

to be blunt - Horrible Bosses is hysterical. absolutely hilarious from start to finish. there was never a scene where i didn't have a gut busting laugh. i don't think 30 seconds ever passed without a great jokes or hilarious tidbit being thrown my way. it's definitely a film that i will have to watch numerous times to catch all the jokes that i missed because i was laughing.

so, what type of funny is Horrible Bosses? a very mixed bag of humor.

Oh wow, thank you so much for this review! Cannot wait to see this now

awesome! thank you! it ended up being about 8 bucks more but i ordered it from amazon.de since i feel safer with an amazon site. man! let me tell ya, i had to open a new window with a "translation" bar on it just to figure out wtf each screen said! the set was $42 from there, but it also has $19.50 in shipping but still, only $8 more than the other site.

says it should be here in between July 21 - July 26th! that's insane! i can't wait! thanks soooooo much for that link! usually i don't even consider ordering blus from outside the states, but god knows when these will (if ever) get released in the U.S.
