[Show spoiler]Jack is/was immortal though which happened in Doctor Who and in this series while every human gains immortal life he looses his. He's also a time agent from the future but don't think that will play heavily in this season.
Yeah I was hoping this was a show that newcomers could jump right into but as it stands, they make you feel like if you didn't watch the other series then you're shit out of luck. I had kept hearing you didn't need to watch the others to start watching now, but I was lied to apparently...

Is a time agent like a time cop, like Van Damme?

Yeah that's what they kept saying while advertising/press releases but like you said I would have been very confused without having seen the first 3 seasons. I mean new viewers would have completely missed the whole Jack subplot and why Gwen and Rhys are in hiding.

Not sure what a time cop is as I never saw that movie but a time agent is like a cop that deals with time travel I believe. Never actually saw the first season of the Doctor Who reboot so I'm not to sure actually.

I would have probably watched the other seasons of this show if I'd known it would be a necessity. I just thought that with everything I'd heard I could jump right in without having to do all that pre-gaming like all other shows.

Yeah that sounds a lot like this movie.

The film stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as a U.S. Federal agent in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when time travel is possible. The story follows an interconnected web of episodes in the agent's life as he fights time-travel crime.

Yeah the good thing with Torchwood is that they are short seasons with the first 2 being 13 episodes and the 3rd being only 5. One thing to mention though is that the first 2 seasons are pretty much stand alone alien of the week type of stories with some stories going past 1 episode. Season 3 is a 5 part mini series with just 1 story same with this new season but 10 episodes instead of 5.

Couldn't recommend this series enough as it's one of my all time favorite shows. The 3rd season is one of the darkest stories I have ever seen on TV though and if you ever get a chance to watch it you won't want to stop until all 5 episodes are done.

I agree about the show not being accessible to new viewers. My first thought when it ended was "well I'm glad I've seen the previous seasons..." Russel T. Davies made it sound like it would be completely fresh and new, but it really wasn't. You miss a lot without knowing these characters already. I'm hoping they'll deal with this more later in the series for new comers, but I could be wrong. I'm interested to know what is going to be different in the UK version...

Yeah I just hope with it not being as inviting as was promised if that will affect episode 2 ratings with people either wanting to catch up with the first 3 seasons or people just giving up all together that found it to confusing.

I may end up having to watch season 3 just for some background information so I'm not totally lost. But I am hoping over the next episode or two they give me more info, otherwise I may just have to stop watching and wait for down the road when I got time to watch the other seasons and then this one too.
