Not sure if there has already been a similar discussion (tried searching but couldn't find anything), but just wondering: when you guys purchase Blu-Rays, do you have any sort of criteria?
My plan is to only buy Blu-Rays that are personal favorites of mine (Star Wars, Lion King, North by Northwest, etc.). I have a pretty impressive DVD collection, but a lot of them were purchased just because I felt the need to buy them, especially if I had seen it in theaters (bad habit). I'm gonna try and sell all unnecessary films to fund my Blu-Ray collection. And as far as replacing DVDs go, I'll only do so if there is a major difference between the DVD and Blu-Ray (such as Apocalypse Now). If not, I'll wait till I have more money in the bank. Plus, it helps that I live in an apartment w/ a bunch of others guys. And together our movie collections (whether they be DVD or Blu-Ray) are quite extensive. So I don't feel the added pressure to get certain films right away if I myself don't already own it. Allows me to save up and purchase other favorites. |

My only criteria is no blind buys. I have blind bought two movies/TV shows and I have not liked either one. So I will only buy films/TV shows that I have seen. I could care less about trying to see it on blu ray before I buy it though. If I do not have the DVD, then I will buy the blu ray automatically. And I almost always wait until things are on sale. Gives me more money for other blu rays that way.

Don't expect to get much for your DVDs if they are Hollywood films. Even second hand Blu-rays aren't fetching much these days unless they are Criterions or new releases. It's almost to the point where selling DVDs isn't worth the hassle unless you have something that is out of print or collectible. The time to sell was a few years ago, unfortunately.
Most people, when they first start collecting Blu-rays, say they are only going to upgrade personal favorites (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.). However, once you get used to the HD picture and sound, it's hard to go back to a DVD (especially if you have a nice setup). |

Eventually I'm planning to replace my entire DVD collection with Blu-Ray copies. However since I have upwards of 400 DVDs and just went Blu within the last month, it will be quite the challenge. Trying to pace myself for obvious reasons, while sprinkling in some newer movies or even ones I never owned on DVD that I think would look great on Blu-Ray.
The other big thing for me is replay value. There are certain movies I love that I really have no interest in owning solely because I would hardly ever or possibly never watch them again. I sort of got away from this when collecting DVDs so I'm going to try to stick to this philosophy a little better when going Blu. Hopefully this will help me keep my collection slimmer and I won't have to worry about replacing every single one of my 412 DVDs. Basically when I'm thinking about buying a movie I ask myself how often I'll watch it. If I can justify watching it more than once a year I'll usually pick it up. |

I only buy stuff that I know I'll watch repeatedly or that I want to see the special features for. I break my own rules all the time with blind buys but I'm also a bargain hunter and never really spend more than $15 on a single film unless it's a Criterion release.

I was real hesitant to upgrade to blu, I mostly enjoy classic films and thought that the blu-ray image would be about the same as movies look on hdtv. Once I took the plunge and bought a few I realized how friggin awesome they could look, I went all out on tons of classics that I found at discount prices that I probably never would have bought on DVD...I remember buying the Searchers and other John Wayne films for about 10 bucks a piece on Amazon.
Now I still try to wait until the price drops unless I really want the film, I wanted Papillon or Solaris right away and paid 10 bucks more on each then if I would wait for a sale. I have upgraded about 7-8 criterions from dvd to blu just because of how solid their transfers are. I should probably sell my old criterion dvd's before they have no demand left. I've made a couple stupid blind buys that I'm sure most would admit to, but I also have taken a chance on a lot of movies that I ended up liking a lot. |

Here's the only real "rules" that I could see myself personally following...
1) Find the best price as often as possible, without cheating anyone in the process.* 2) No horror films. 3) No raunchy or sexually explicit films. 4) No purchasing just for the sake of having it. 5) No purchasing something I'll only watch once or twice a year. *I'm willing to pay a minimal difference in price (up to three dollars or so), if it means receiving the item immediately, versus waiting a week for Amazon. |

1) Has to be something I will watch multiple times
2) When I first started I blind bought a lot, now I rarely ever do. And the majority of them now are highly acclaimed films. 3) Will wait for sales if new releases don't fall into my price range (catalog: $15 at the absolute most, new movies $20 at the most) 4) Must have good reviews for PQ. I don't have a full fledged speaker system yet so audio is not as important. |

No blind buys. I used to do that when I had a DVDS collection. Very stupid and a waste of money.
I will only buy movies I enjoy and I know I will watch multiple times. Not garbage movies just for the sake of buying. That's why my collection is small and usually focused on a certain genre. Quite a few people with huge bluray collections say they only buy movies they enjoy. I kind of doubt that. I'm sure some of them buy them just for the sake of it. I also buy movies when they are on sale. Blurays always go on sale. So there is no pont in wasting $30 or more on new releases when they will be $10-15 or less in a few months. |
