If that was the best chart Toshiba could come up with to try to make themselves look good, I wonder how bad the other charts they had at their disposal would have made them look. --Darin |

Ookie, they're not going to go out without some kind of a fight -- but right now, it seems like the issue is more one of hurt egos on both sides, with Java (in Microsoft's case) and possible massive hardware returns in the 1-month post-Christmas window (in Toshiba's) being the additional reasons.
Although I'd definitely like to know more about the retailer commitment to HD DVD, whatever that may be. |

A month!?! Seriously, unless these studios are stuck in contracts that even prevent them from discussing it. I think waiting a month is a diservice to consumers and retailers. I am really surprised that retailers would be willing to stick with this. Hopefully, this delay is all talk and we will hear something sooner.
Unreal. ![]() |

Having heard the terms of Universal's contract with Toshiba, Paramount is simply trying squeeze the best deal it can get from the BDA. They are going on the assumption that Universal won't make a decision until their contract with Toshiba ends at the end of January.
What the BDA should do is negotiate with Universal and a get similar time frame deal with Warner. In other words, Universal could sign a contract right now and announce this to the world. However, their Blu-ray exclusivity won't be effective until the end of January ...just like Warner exclusivity won't be effective until the end of May. When Universal falls in line, Paramount will have no choice in the matter but to opt out of their contract with Toshiba. In the end, the BDA only has to pay one of the studios ...not both. Use this fact to expedite the negotiation process. The BDA still has all the leverage. I am sure they are using it. Last edited by Balian; 01-10-2008 at 01:34 AM. |

While I think Toshiba is going to be stupid about this, I don't think MS is going to do anything to help them other than to not do anything else to hurt them. Go back to the Digital Bits, there has been another update and it involves more quotes from MS, including Gates himself trumpeting downloads to USA Today. Also included is a quote from someone at MS that the success of HD DVD was not vital to the success of the 360.
Given Toshiba's confident statements about their studio support pre WB announcement, and their obvious ability for dwelling in the land of denial, I wouldn't put too much in their confident stements about retailler support. Chris Quote:

The bad retail situation has to be rectified i.e. I could not find "Man on Fire" at any retail outlet in the Detroit area! How can one sell BD'S if BB, Circuit City, Target etc. does not order them to sell? ![]() This bad retail situation is the reason I buy all my BD'S from Amazon ![]() |

Penton-Man, if WildeZc (the logo designer) approves, do you think you could pass these designs or provide contact information on who he can get in touch with to submit these designs?

Well, I feel bad I couldn't join in on the festivities with the rest of you after the Warner anounement since I was given a nice vacation from the forums by the mods.
![]() ![]() Anyways, I would like to thank the BDA and the insiders for coming through where it really matters and securing Warner. I could barely sleep over the weekend from all the excitement following the Warner anounement. Here's to a Blu year!! ![]() |

A question to the insiders
How soon do you think it will take all retailers to start making shelf changes with all of the happenings from Warner going Blu to announcements from CES? I ask this because today I was in a local Best Buy that added a 3rd bay of shelving for Blu ray titles literally over night (I was in this store yesterday and it was setup 2 Blus vs 2 HD DVD shelving. Now it is 3 Blus vs 2 HD DVD. I have also noticed Best Buy commercials only mentioning Blu ray players with no mention of HD DVD players. Thanks in advance for your replies! Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits posted that today. He said his sources are convinced Paramount and Universal will go Blu, the announcement *could* be a day, a week, or months before they officially swapped sides.

This is what Brian Williams is taking home (after the ad, of course)………………
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#22576057 ^ The above is a plug for Sony Electronics; therefore I expect to see some Sony water bottles for my mountain bike in the mail a.s.a.p. P.S. The gadget to close out the NBC National News was not thought of as “impractical” by my wife…………. but rather cute. ![]() |

paidgeek, SPHE didn't announce the release slate for Q1 & 2 of 2008. Any earth-shattering plans on that front?
