I'll buy this including many other classic theatrical short animation on Blu-ray. Glad I didn't buy them on DVD yet.

Me too. I'm down for all the classic shorts on Blu I can get. Need some Ren & Stimpy and Looney Tunes and Popeye...next

I didn't buy any of the Tom & Jerry's on DVD either. But I did buy a few of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD sets. I actually picked up Vol 3 recently, on sale for $16! Couldn't pass it up -- especially with no Looney Tunes on the immediate Blu-ray horizon.

The Looney Tunes sets were pretty good. Didn't much care for the "randomness" of the shorts on the sets...but I digress. The Tom and Jerry blu-ray looks to be doing everything right...much like the Popeye Volumes -- complete and in order! But I digress again...

I never bought any of these collections on DVD, either. I always wanted to, but hated how so many of them were often out of chronological order or were only certain "best of" selections. I never wanted anything like that. I wanted something more like this. Glad I waited all those years.

I hope this set sells well and also that Disney takes note, because I would love to get their classic shorts on Blu!
THANK you. Exactly the right attitude to have about this. To sweep this kind of history under the rug results in a clueless society. Did you know that something like 3/4ths of high school seniors can't explain a B&W photograph of a bathroom that reads "Whites Only." It boggles my mind.

To censor these things sets a dangerous precedent for remembering out own history --- and while many might think of these as "just cartoons" they should remain historically accurate and uncensored.

I will only buy if that's the case.

No, it's not a forgotten issue, but in this age of political correctness it does get swept under the rug on occasion.

I like the way they are treating these issues in the set, keeping the racially sensitive stuff on the extras menu rather than on the list of main features. It basically says, "Yes, we acknowledge this embarrassing part of the show's history, but we do not support the ignorant ideas it puts forth."

I'm really looking forward to this first volume.

Nobody said "forgotten." It's definitely not overly discussed in American life.

Also, it was the 2006 NAEP history exam in which "2/3rds of high school seniors couldn't explain a photo of a theater whose portal reads "Colored Entrance."

A single book/film release is hardly going to be a major thing. Few young people read anymore (also backed strongly by evidence) unless it's a Harry Potter book and even if THE HELP makes 100 million dollars at the box office that would translate to just 8-12 million in attendance. Hardly a large percentage of a nation of 300+ million.

We have a habit of ignoring some of the biggest parts of our history as a nation and minor censoring here and there just adds to the problem. A population unaware of the mistakes of the past is doomed to repeat them.

History fades with time, and it's impossible to teach all of it to students. All we really get in our basic educations is highlights of the big moments.

And no, having knowledge of the past does not prevent us from making the same mistakes as a society. Human beings are pretty good at doing the same dumb shit over and over and over, regardless of what history has taught.

Having racially sensitive stuff on a set like this does not help us to remember the injustices of racism, it just serves as one of the markers of the era it came out of. I want it preserved simply because I think film should stand for what it originally stood for, warts and all.

We should never hide from ourselves as individuals or as a society. We should always acknowledge who we are and where we came from, no matter how embarrassing it may be.

Got some amazing news for you folks from Comic Con.

Really, really great news

Quote:
SAN DIEGO — George Feltenstein has waited for this for a very long time.

The SVP of theatrical catalog marketing for Warner Home Video was attending his first-ever Comic-Con July 21. But what he’s really excited about happens months later, when the studio releases the newly remastered Tom and Jerry Golden Collection and Looney Tunes Platinum Collection on Blu-ray Disc.

“Since the beginning of high definition, we’ve wanted to do this and planned on doing this,” he said before a panel discussing the releases. “This is 1080p, not upconverted, and we spent a ton of money cleaning it up. The film dirt, not the grain or cell dust. We knew we had to do it right.”

Jerry Beck, an animation historian, praised the finished product, calling the uncut, uncensored, un-dubbed, sparkling clean animations “the crown jewels.”

“I’m always saying these are as classic as The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Citizen Kane, but they’re treated as kids fodder,” he said. “They’re not treated with the respect they deserve.”

Meant to be seen in theaters, the animated shorts were meant for a wider audience than just children, Feltenstein said, and the Blu-ray restorations are “like [having] 35 mm in your home.”

Up until a year ago, the idea of a Tom and Jerry Golden Collection on Blu-ray wasn’t possible, with Warner and Feltenstein convinced that the original “Tom and Jerry” negatives had been lost in a 1978 fire. Just last year Feltenstein discovered that they were stored at the University of California, Los Angeles, instead.

“How they got there, I’ll never know,” he said.

The original negatives’ survival allowed Warner to present the classic animation in the best possible way, and even fellow animation experts expressed awe when Feltenstein showed off one “Tom and Jerry” clip, with DVD on one half of the screen and Blu-ray on the other.

“It’s like the Sistine Chapel,” said Spike Brandt, director of “The Looney Tunes Show.” “We’ve been looking at it through years of varnish and soot. Now [all that] is taken away and the colors just pop.”

Tom and Jerry Golden Collection will be released Oct. 25 ($34.99) and includes 37 of the original shorts, in chronological order. Looney Tunes Platinum Collection will be released Nov. 15 ($59.96) and will also be available as a limited edition gift set ($79.98).

Awesome, and great story about film surviving. Not as awesome as the uncut Metropolis in Buenoe Aires, but close.

I can't wait to get this set and Looney Tunes if they are excellent quality. And the good reviews are putting me at ease.

That's fantastic news indeed! Sounds like these shorts are getting proper restorations and not run through computer software in 5 minutes
I'll gladly part with my cash for these sets

Exactly. I never liked how some studios would edit or not include certain material for these reasons. All they have to do is have some message at the beginning saying that the material is a product of its time and doesn't reflect the current opinions of the studio (kind of like what they do when commentaries are included).

I'm really excited for this set and the LT set. I placed pre-orders for both. I'm trying to figure out who I can give a set of T&J to as a gift so I can justify purchasing a second set to support the release.
