I just got done pre-ordering the new ones via Criterion (getting my GC too! nice!) and I updated my collection and was curious at the rate of release via BD vs. DVD.....

It's been pretty much (or will be through-October's releases) 3 years of BD releases, and that amounts to 120 spines (or entries via this site, not sure actual spine numbers)

Obviously there was some "Dual format" overlap, but does anyone have an approximate number of years/mo. of DVD releases via Criterion (before they began doing a BD for every DVD they announced) and the number of DVDs released during that time?

Thanks guys! Don't plan on buying any... just want to see them. Will look for them on Netflix and Hulu.

Thanks again.

Seijin Suzuki films are also very cool (one of his is in the Nikkatsu set), but you should probably stay away from the Criterion Branded To Kill and Tokyo Drifter DVDs, as they're reportedly bad transfers.

As per Amazon decriptions, Grand Illusion was released November 23, 1999 and the last DVD only, L'enfance Nue, was released August 17, 2010. I'll let you do the rest of the math.

Grand Illusion was not the first DVD Criterion released--despite its being Spine #1--the first Criterion DVDs came out in 1998, but I don't know which ones they are...

it might have been "Seven Samurai" (the ultra-rare 1st printing that has the restoration demo) Armageddon was the last CC Laserdisc.

What's the chance of Criterion releasing The Mikado and Topsy-Turvy together with some sort of box set in the future? (I think that would be cool since they are both "Mikado" related!)

As long as they keep them for separate sale. I have Topsy Turvy but I need to get The Mikado still. The sale in November will definitely mean I'm getting it.

I'd like to see 12 Monkeys come to Criterion (especially since the Universal release was a "lazy" half-assed HDDVD port over to blu-ray). There's probably a chance since Criterion seems to have some affinity towards Terry Gilliam.

Also Royal Tenenbaums needs to be upgraded to blu, I'm not even a Wes Anderson fan but for some reason I just loved this one. Really, I'm dying to get most of their back-catalogue upgraded to blu-ray. There's so many films that I'd still like to get that are only DVD but I can't bring myself to buy DVD's anymore - especially not at criterion prices.

Picked up a few from sale. Some I have seen others I haven't.

Never seen:
Marry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
Leon Morin, Priest
Blow Out

and I will also count the Thin Red Line as not watched since the first time I watched it was back when it was released. I've grown a lot more mature since my teens.

Watched:
High And Low
Kagemusha
The Darjeeling Limited

If anyone is in the Fresno area of California, B&N has tons of CC blu's in stock. I think MCML was the only movie that didn't have multiple copies. Does anyone know when the sale is over? I heard from people two different dates some say the first and the other date I have heard is the eleventh.

I hope Le Samourai makes it to blu ray soon, but there are already a couple Melville films on the format so Criterion may wait awhile.

Anybody have the By Brakhage anthology? How is it? I'm uninitiated but it seems really interesting from a philosophical/metaphysical/abstract/contemplative point of view.

There's really no reason or forseeable benefit to do that, especially since they are already both available. Just buy them separately.

watched Paris, Texas earlier today. eesh, another reason to never blind buy Criterions are very much not compatible with me. i found Paris, Texas to be completely uninteresting and disconnected from me. someone could have walked into any room with these characters and violently killed them all and i wouldn't have blinked twice or cared for a moment.

2.5/5
