Hah! I hope I didn't derail the thread!
FWIW, I'm looking forward to CtB this week. A shame about the different film version in different regions...but like my beloved Escape From NY BD, I'll be placing the dvd right inside the BD case to form my very own Ultimate Edition!

Basil's music works perfectly there. Plus, the character interaction between them gives Conan an added dimension -- he's not just a thoughtless thug, he contemplates what to do and makes the right decision, basically conveying to her that he's not a God and not someone for her to worship like Thulsa. It's like self-empowerment for her, it shows his character better than the theatrical cut, and what's corny about that?

I guess if you like the more simplistic approach Universal took to editing the ending (against the wishes of the director and the intention of the screenplay), you don't like those additions, but I think the longer (Milius' intended) cut makes Conan ought to be a lot more than your standard neighborhood barbarian myself, and that's a good thing. Universal's editing took out some key dramatic aspects of the princess (making her almost completely pointless) and stripping character development out probably because they thought young guys wouldn't like the "mushy stuff" and just wanted to see heads ripped off. Seems like you would be one of those, lol.
I am not misreading it. i know what it's trying to do. It's just that A) It did not need to be done. I got that she was done with the idol worship when she is laughing at Doom riding away. I get that Conan is a thinker everytime they show him deep in thought. And B) it was not done well.

The music que in the part where Arnold hold out his hand is awful. It fits the orignal so much better.

I know it's all about opinions. I think I could handle all that extra stuff if there was additional music. But it all come across as trying to be more than it is because of the misplaced music que. But even if it had the extra music I would still prefer the original ending.

Oh well.

Conan the Destroyer Blu-ray Review up now!

Just to confirm the US BD only has the trailer as an extra.

I watched the featurettes on YouTube, so I'm fine with having the US Blu-Ray release since the version of the film doesn't change between the US and HK release. Glad to see that the transfer is fantastic. For once, Universal got the transfers right on catalog titles. That's pretty surprising.

Well, I wonder if Universal did their own transfers, or if they licensed the Fox/MGM masters used in other territories?

(Apologies if that's already been established elsewhere on this thread)

I must have missed the point too. Because having watched the original US cut for many years prior to ever seeing the extended cut, I relate to everything he has written.

Next question, is the US BD the true Euro cut, or just the extended cut with the Moby Dick scene removed. i.e there were subtle differences between both in the moments leading up to the Moby Dick scene:

Quote:
It should be noted that the rehabilitation of this scene led to the disappearance of a shot in the new cut, compared to the old cut: after the princess closes her eyes, we originally came back on a pensive Conan, sitted at the bottom of the mound (pictures 1 to 3). In the new cut, the princess shot in profile (a shot which was appreciably shortened besides) directly dissolves into the "Moby Dick" scene: the Conan shot is gone! Such a choice is debatable, and one can wonder whether Milius is truly responsible for it. In fact, it is obvious that he and Schwarzenegger are only commenting the old cut on the DVD: the director's comment which accompanies the "Moby Dick" scene was clearly recorded separately, during a subsequent session, in the absence of the actor [1]. It is thus possible that Milius was only shown this scene on its own, out of context, and not reinstated in the new cut. So its "Director's Approved" quality could probably be disputed...

I wouldn't mind owning the "proper" Euro cut and I'd appreciate if owners of the US BD could confirm this for me.

The interesting thing is, if Milius really prefers the extended cut with the Moby Dick scene which was on the latest DVD, then why the heck have the studio gone and cut it out of the BD release...

Probably because he has little to no say in the matter.

The point is it was added to the DVD and removed from the BD. So assuming he actually wanted it on the DVD then the studio respected his wishes, yet reversed that with the BD. Doesn't quite add up.

Or maybe they just used a different print.

Yes I considered that and it is quite possibly the case.. Although they would have had a HD version from when they created the DVD.

Was the point just to make the ending worse?? Because it is.

Conan misses that he never had a normal life, the princess feels the need to worship something, Conan shows compassion and honors his deal with the king, Mako wants to fall asleep reading the final voiceover becuse we already know Conan is taking the girl to her father because we saw him carry her off and blah blah blah BARF!!!

You must be one of those who did not watch the film when it first came out to theaters, then on HBO, then on RCA video disc, then VHS, then laser disc and then the original DVD. Someone who does not love how the Flow and Score to this film was perfect as it was.

I was able to figure everything out without the extra stuff. I guess some people just need to have things explained to them.

Thats OK though. If you like redundant endings then I can see why you are happy.

Default Destroyer? Really?

Are any of you actually going to buy Conan the Destroyer? I remember watching that movie as a kid and being completely pissed off at the execution of it. I thought I read somewhere that the budget for the second movie was actually lower than the first. Anyone know if that was true?

For those interested in still ordering the US version of both film, Amazon has a $5 off when ordering both. At Amazon's current pricing you could get both for $31.98.
