It'll be Dolby TrueHD

What about THX-High-Def! (imageine that!)
THX is a set of certifications, it's not a format or codec

If you've heard DTS HD-MA decoded by a THX certified receiver like I have, you'd vote for it hands down. Dolby TrueHD is an extraordinarily close second.

All the factors of Lucas/Dolby aside. I'd like to hear it in DTS HD-MA. Being that it is Fox I'm sure it will be considered fully.

Either way, Lucas has never let us down sound-wise before. I'm positive he'll give us the best audio experience no matter what format it is in.

Why would one like to have True HD AND DTS HD-MA on the same disc? Technically they do exactly the same, which means it's a waste of space to have both. IF Star Wars comes out, it will be distributed by Fox which means it will be DTS HD-MA. We can specualte all we want, but why should we if we already know how it's gonna end up?

I agree about the double format on one disc, but you are completely wrong about the Fox= DTS thing.

Fox only distributes the Star Wars films. Lucas has absolute, total control over the content and both technical and creative choices. Fox won't even be mastering it. It will be done in house by Lucas and his people or outside by persons of his choice under his approval.

Lucas has a longstanding relationship with Dolby, he'll continue using their codecs just like Spielberg and DTS

What you're hearing is DTS being slightly louder, and they tend to cook people's mixes to emphasize LFE and other things that philes like. They did this all the time with DVD. Saving Private Ryan being a notorious example. DTS right now is doing all the HDMA encodes so far as I know. What you're hearing is not the quality of the codec, you're tasting their spiked drinks, or a personal bias carried over from DVD. Lossless is lossless.

Van Ling did both trilogies on DVD. Van is also responsible for all Jamese Cameron DVDs except Aliens (Charles de Lazurika as part of the Alien Quad), as well as Independendence Day.

I sense something ..... something I haven't felt since .....

Watching T2 on blu which is THX certified, and it has both Dolby and DTS, so I'm hoping both. DTS (in general) sounds SO much better!

Give me a little bit. I'll go shuttle up to the Death Star to check with the boss, and I'll get right back to everyone.

Sony releases don't tend to have dialnorm active on TrueHD. But even if it is enabled, when volume matched, the sound will be the same. Dialnorm is grossly misunderstood here: it does not impact the sound, or even the relative volume between the channels.

You're talking vanilla codecs, where yes, 1.5mbps DTS is going to kick 448kbps Dolby butt the same mix being equal. We're talking lossless

I prefer DTS HD MA; however, I do not mind TrueHD. Nonetheless, since Stars Wars are a high budget films, FOX should start using 7.1 audio (just like New Line), instead of 5.1 audio. It make sense, New Line’s films cost the same price as FOX’s, but they all contain 7.1 DTS HD MA track, if New Line can do it then so can FOX. FOX’s films are overprized; they should make an extra effort to use 7.1 audio.

I would disagree slightly with the highlighted part. Properly decoded by the receiver the DTS HD-MA is not louder. In fact, on my set-up when I listen to a Dolby TrueHD signal, I am set at an ideal volume level of -15. When I put in a DTS HD-MA disk I find the ideal level to be -10 to -5.( -5 being louder on my receiver than -15) If anything the DTS HD-MA codec is forcing less volume into the mix than Dolby TrueHD.

I do however, notice slightly better separation in the speakers and a miniscule improvement on dialog and surrounds when using DTS HD-MA over Dolby TrueHD.

Really these are such small differences it really doesn't matter much. Both are lossless audio codecs. I think the biggest difference lies in what the director was going for, and how well that translates to my BD.

Hell, I've heard Dolby Digital EX soundtracks that blew my socks off.

Considering these are Lucas films we are talking about and going by the previous DVD's using Dolby for their sound codec, I would expect to have TrueHD on any Blu-ray release of the Star Wars films.

More I was describing their previous patterns. I still see no reason to believe, especially when fighting for relevancy that they wouldn't fall right back into old patterns of cooking mixes

To make any truly meaningful comparison/contrast between the two, wouldn't you have to use a title with both TrueHD and DTS MA tracks? Are there any titles that offer a choice between the two?

You are absolutely correct!

I do not know of any titles that have both on one disk. I refer to the general experience in listening to my Blu-Rays. I always thoroughly enjoy my Dolby TrueHD titles, but I like the DTS HD-MA titles slightly better (sound wise), and I notice the separation and clarity easier on my DTS HD-MA enabled disks than I do on my Dolby TrueHD disks.

Maybe that means that the directors that have their titles on Fox or Newline, are better at creating their mix than the ones that work for the other studios, but I severely doubt it.

I own enough Blu-Rays that I have gotten the taste for it, and can really tell the difference now. It is a small ( incredibly small.) difference, but it does exist.

I feel like this is splitting hairs. If Lucas goes for Dolby TrueHD I couldn't be happier. Lucas Arts is known for their amazing audio, and I'm sure it will sound unbelievable. They will push the encode as far as it can go, and it will be Master quality audio for sure. Whether on not they use DTS HD-MA.
