I've recently watched Saving Private Ryan and Rango, so my list must be amended.

Rango is the best looking blu-ray, hands down. It's ridiculously not even close.

SPR is probably the best looking liva-action blu-ray that I have seen. I still have yet to see Avatar, and recently purchased The Thin Red Line, so we'll see if that changes at all in the coming months.

I think The Thin Red Line looks better than SPR.

1. The Thin Red Line.
2. Rango.
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey.

That covers a newer live-action, an animated, and an older catalog.

Best I've seen so far...

1. 2001: Space Odyssey; looks like it was made yesterday
2. No Country for Old Men; put Blu Ray on the map
3. Apocalypse Now

A nice recent surprise was Criterion's "Easy Rider" blu. Wow, it was like watching the movie for the first time. Colors just popped off the screen, sharp, but natural looking grain. Couldn't believe how nice they made this movie look.

2001 is definitely not the best looking blu-ray, but considering its age, it has to be mentioned. Looks miraculous for a movie that's over 40 years old.

Hope so. Most likely going to watch it this week.

All these damn 2.5-3 hour movies I'm buying are clogging up my unwatched list.

The Singin' in the Rain and Royal Wedding scenes in That's Entertainment are spectacular. I wish those films were out on Bluray.

What difference does its age make? MGM musicals look even better and they're 60-70 years old.

2001 looks good because it was 70mm, and it isn't even a particularly exceptional 70mm film when it comes to image quality. Have you seen Ten Commandments or It's A Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World?

I was actually disappointed by American in Paris (not in the film, but the blu-ray). I remember specifically being disappointed in it's PQ. Don't get me wrong it fine for it's age and there was nothing that stood out as particularly bad, but considering it's 4.5 rating on here I suppose I expected a little better.

Searchers I see is 5 star PQ rating on here, I remember loving this one (first time I had ever seen it was my one viewing of the blu-ray), but I don't remember thinking anything particular about the image quality. I'll have to check it out again to see if it lives up to some other similarly aged titles I've seen recently.

I know these are older titles so the ratings might be treated a bit differently, but a poster up above dismissed 2001:Space Odyssey as not one of the better looking blu-rays. I have to disagree with that one. Space Odyssey actually DID blow me away just for it's picture quality. It might be in the top 3, but i don't yet have many of the more modern titles "top rated" blu rays like Minority Report, Blade Runner, Sin City etc... so my rating would be incomplete.

I have these two but I haven't watched them on blu yet, but FYI I don't think Ten Commandments is 70MM. Not that it matters because it's still rated 5 stars, so I'm sure it has top notch PQ.

I said it was not one of the best. I also said it looks miraculous.

I'd still give the PQ 5 stars and use it as demo material for older titles, but I wouldn't say it's among the be-all-end-all of blu-ray video quality in the same way Saving Private Ryan and Rango are.
