How many of the older Criterion titles (before new spines came out on blu-ray simultaneously) do you guys think will be available when all is said and done?

That's about 450 titles pre-BD. About 53 of them have been upgraded during the past three years. If that trend continued, it would take another 24 years to release them all!

I figure many titles are OOP and Criterion no longer has the rights, but I'm just curious what the catalog will look like in, say, 10 years.

In ten years, the catalog will only be available in digital format through Hulu+ or some other ridiculous non-physical format outlet. At least, that's what Peter Becker at Criterion told me over lunch the other day.

Nope. I am most definitely a girl. My online name is one I took way back in high school when I was going through a huge Monty Python phase. Perhaps I should change my avatar to something a bit more girly than Josey Wales and the Pussycats.

I agree, the ending was perfect in the tone of the time period and actually gave the film an edge. Loved it.

You should ask him if the studios ever ask about the LaserDisc special features when the Criterion license expires. Not all of us can afford $60-70+ LD's for specific special features we want. It would be nice to have everything possible on the latest edition of a film.

What will we talk about when everything is digital and there is no packaging?

Why the skyrocketing value of the titles we own now, of course.

Nice. Did he drop any hints of a Border Radio upgrade?

The day that no physical media exists is the day that I retire from collecting all media, period.

Oh, she's already tossed a pie or two of her own at people who care more about packaging and collecting than films. Granted, not a lot of originality points on that one but her heart was definitely in the right place.

Well, right for this thread anyway

I have no idea, and that's why I bought Le Corbeau, Alphaville, Band of Outsiders, and Grand Illusion during this sale. 3 of those titles are now oop, and I have no idea when any of them will be released on blu ray if ever. I also ordered Coup de Torchon on Amazon.

Got my first order from B&N, and I was absolutely horrified to find that my copy of Black Orpheus didn't come with the Blue Criterion Seal of Approval on the wrapping.

I find this completely unacceptable and may never order from B&N again.
