Default Bad Day At Black Rock (1955)

A classic, ideal for blu ray. A modern mystery western with the kind of gravitas only Spencer Tracy could give to a film. You've also got Robert Ryan who excelled playing cowards, racists and bullies even though he was a tireless campaigner for civil rights, Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine in support, some fine 2.55:1 cinematography and an urgent score. All tightly directed by John Sturges.

I was lucky enough to catch Bad Day at Black Rock on TCM a month or so ago and what a surprise this classic movie turned out to be. Hopefully this important movie will not be overlooked in being restored in preparation for a Blu-Ray release. Academy Award nominations: John Sturges - Best Director; Spencer Tracy - Best Actor; and Millard Kaufman - Best Screenplay. Add this movie to my Blu-Ray wish list, too.

Count me in, as I love this movie. It would look great on Blu-ray if a proper restoration were done. I still have my Criterion laserdisc of this title, for the commentary track.

HDNet Movies was showing it a lot the past two months, so it might be in the works.

I believe there is another thread for BDABB floating around somewhere but this would make a great addition to my collection.

I have great memories watching this one with my old man. I'd love to hear that commentary track but something tells me it will stay with Criterion. It would be amazing to get Criterion to release it on Blu-ray. That would make my day.

Is this controlled by MGM (Fox) or Warner Bros.?

I'd love to see this one on blu-ray.

Let us hope so. The physical media market is about as active as my sex life. TCM ran this the other night. It's a terrifically tense flick, superbly directed by Sturges with gorgeous scope cinematography (I think it's 2.35 rather than 2.55), but it was a pillarboxed SD upscale . Apparently Sturges commentary on the laserdisc was gold, but I'm fairly sure that that's never, ever surfacing again.

The commentary can be found online if you want to listen to it.
