Exchange rates are always in flux but you can get a pretty good idea of the cost in USD via a site like:

http://www.xe.com

Some of Amazon's international sites also offer a currency conversion option which locks in the final price in USD.

if you go to amazon.uk...it simple they convert everything and like charge u a buck or two to do the conversion....at check out it tells u exactly what u are gonna pay in us dollars...did it for the first time last night and it was really simple...shockingly so...but the exchange rate for a us dollar in brittish pounds is a bit over 1.50 us to 1 bp...

I use to use http://www.xe.com for the conversions. Add a dollar or two on top of that depending on how much you spend.

Often it is better to use the home currency if you're looking to pay less, but sometimes you can most easily check the max price the way rdodolak suggested.

I've never order from uk amazon...am i gonna get slammed with a huge import tax...is that why people don't buy box sets from there....like i just bought a few items and there was an additional hit to my payment method of 1.65 was that the import/export tax or was that just the EU part of the tax...cuz my item hasn't arrived yet...nor has it actually shipped only being prepared...

People import the box sets all the time in fact there is a thread dedicated to lower uk prices then us prices in the hot deals section. I haven't been hit with any import tax before from anywhere and I've been ordering from overseas for a while now (other items then movies) the most recent item I got in was a replica of the sword in sucker punch and I didn't have to pay anything extra. That 1.65 was probably just the conversion fee.

As long as you stay under $200 USD per day for deliveries you shouldn't be hit with customs fees.

What about us Canadians? How do the import fees work coming from the UK? By default, anything over 50 US Amzon charges the import tax on us, so is the UK the same?

In the UK, it's much worse - if we order any DVD or Blu over £18 ($30 roughly) outside of Europe, we're liable to pay import duty. The worst part is that that the bill does not come from Revenue and Customs directly; the post office spots whether the item is over the limit and we have to pay them to release the goods, including an £8 handling fee.

You can try Amazon UK itself to see if they charge duty on the front end; I don't think they do. If they don't, Canada Post is supposed to collect duty on delivery (much like the UK poster below) if the package is over C$20--though they often let bigger packages go to avoid the hassle. (I haven't checked the Canadian duty-free threshold lately; if Amazon US is only charging it at US$50, it's possible it may have increased.)

That, plus UK e-tailers' VAT-avoidance schemes, is a huge reason why boxsets are much cheaper in the UK; they try to get the price below £18 so it can be shipped from the Channel Islands (outside the EU for VAT purposes), Switzerland, or even Hong Kong to the UK VAT-free. (The "duty" you pay on packages just over £18 is actually 20% VAT plus the £8 fee; the threshold for actual tariffs is higher, and most of the havens have no tariffs to the UK.)

Most "UK" e-tailers are actually based in those havens; for sub-£18 items they either don't include VAT in prices or apply VAT towards shipping. If over £18, some include VAT in the price and label the package "VAT Paid" with their HMRC account number; others make you pay it to Royal Mail with its £8 fee. (If the UK is like the U.S., the fee charged by non-mail couriers like FedEx, UPS & DHL Express will be much more than £8. )

Amazon UK does it a little differently so they can have it both ways: Sub-£18 items shipped to the UK technically come from a third party in Jersey (Indigostarfish), with the VAT savings paying for free UK shipping. All other items (i.e., all non-UK shipments and over-£18 items shipped to the UK) ship directly from the UK; VAT is adjusted to local rates for the rest of the EU, and refunded completely outside the EU (including North America & Australia). That's why non-EU Amazon UK customers see a price drop of 16.67% (i.e., 20% of the pre-VAT price) during checkout, except for old-fashioned paper books (no VAT in the UK).

One huge difference between the U.S. and the rest of the world (including Canada): Most of the world collects its version of sales tax (VAT, GST, etc.) as well as tariffs on imports. However, the U.S. does not collect sales tax as that's strictly a state tax, but U.S. Customs is a federal agency that collects only tariffs; that's why the duty-free threshold is much higher here (US$200). For sales tax, it's no different than ordering from Amazon US in most states: Except for the 8 states with no sales tax, you're technically supposed to pay "use tax" directly to your state, but almost no one does. (And unlike Amazon US, this applies to all states--even NY & WA State. )

Default Pulp fiction

Hey i am looking at getting pulp fiction on import...I know there are 3 versions...Pol..Dut..and hk...french ruled out...I hear that the HK has pitch issues not sure if it would be an issue but something to consider...I can get the pol disc..hear good things but nothing overwhelmingly good or bad...I have heard a few good things about the dut..nothing either way as well...mostly it seems to depend on what ever your perticular taste is or what version you have...it seems to be all in all pretty equal....IS THIS CORRECT? or is one truely overwhelmingly better...B/c they are all around the same price give or take a few bucks...Hk is like 30 and will take 2 weeks...The pol is around 30 and will take like 2-3 weeks aswell and the dut is like 33 and will take 3-5 days...so if there is no extreme differences i think it is apparent which one i will be going for but just thought i would get it confirmed that either one is not overwhelmingly better or that the dutch doesn't have an overwhelming weekness....BTW does the UK and HK version of deer hunter both have pitch issues with 5.1 soundtrack considering it is both studio canal?...............Thanks

Don't know anything about that version but the US release will be coming out on the 23rd. The price is pretty cheap as well $10.99.

Don't feel bad. I just realized that my amazon.com account is universal. You can buy from any of the amazon stores, and all of your information is always with you. Amazon is such a great retailer.

I'll be buying a few UK films in th near future.

Yea i was debating to get the us release cuz i have the alliance 1080i copy of hostage but i figure for 10 bucks to take a chance on the HK version with 7.1 truHd and DTS hd...it seems to be from 2010 so i'll see how it is...

Taipan...
Yea i have a few uk titles....some are identical without special features...but there are some pretty good deals if you buy like 4 or 5 movies at a crack...like i ended up getting the anchorman bestbuy exclusive, and as far as i can tell it's identical from the uk for like 12-15 bucks...
