I doubt that'll happen... UM generates too much money, and I see maybe a 5-10 year bowl ban. (which if they got banned for 10 years from bowl games, thats almost like a death penalty lol )

Source - http://www.cnn.com/2011/SPORT/08/17/...caa/index.html

Quote:
The University of Miami says it is cooperating with an investigation into claims by an imprisoned former booster that he spent millions on gifts, entertainment and travel for Hurricanes athletes.

"We will vigorously pursue the truth, wherever that path may lead, and I have insisted upon complete, honest, and transparent cooperation with the NCAA from our staff and students," the school's president, Donna Shalala wrote in an open letter Wednesday.

Shalala said she was "upset, disheartened and saddened" by the allegations leveled by Nevin Shapiro, a onetime Miami businessman now serving a 20-year federal prison term for fraud. Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports that he showered dozens of Miami players with cash and jewelry, paid restaurant and nightclub tabs and supplied prostitutes over an 8-year period -- and that several coaches were aware of the activity.

Shapiro was arrested in 2010 on charges of overseeing a Ponzi scheme that prosecutors eventually determined had totaled $930 million. He pleaded guilty to securities fraud and money laundering that September and told Yahoo! that his accusations against Miami were part of his agreement to cooperate with prosecutors.

The NCAA, which regulates college sports, said it has been investigating Shapiro's claims for five months. NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a written statement that if true, the allegations show the need for "serious and fundamental change" in college sports, especially regarding the conduct of boosters and agents.

The Hurricanes open their football season September 5 against Maryland. Head Coach Al Golden, who was picked to lead the team in December, told reporters before practice Wednesday that he wanted to clear up the matter "as quickly as we can."

"This is a very complicated issue obviously, because of the source and because of the allegations," Golden said. "But again, I'm here to get to the bottom of it."

"It's really important to understand that we have a lot of guys in that locker room that do things the right way, that come from great families and have made good decisions," he added.
Now is the time for change across the landscape of college football. What has happened in Miami is a travesty, and we deserve to be punished for our actions. As a fan, I am ashamed of my program. But what my hopes are is that Hurricane nation can overcome this and hold our heads high while we weather the storm. (Pun intended) We are more than likely going to have some bad years upcoming, but let's get through them and come back with hunger to rewrite our image. We have won nationals titles before, and we will again. Go 'Canes!

Here's some wild pics of Nevin Shapiro hanging with Canes players and partying in luxury. Included are autographed photos players gave him where they refer to Shapiro as "Lil Luke." That's obviously a reference to Little Luther Campbell - the recording artist who was known to give Canes players illegal benefits back in the 80's-90's. There's also many of copies of Shapiro's credit card bills all over the internet where you can see the thousands of dollars he spent at clubs partying it up with UM players. Hard to believe such massive NCAA violations were happening in south beach so frequently over so many years without notice. This thing is going to get a lot worse before it gets better for the Canes.

lol I'm starting a ponzi scheme to get UMD back to the promise land of the 1950's... Only problem is I don't think 930 million is enough

I think its actually better that its just so much and goes so many places and deals with so many players that its just too much to punish on an individual basis. Like I said I see a ton of scholarships gone and at LEAST 5 years banned from bowl games... Or something like all wins vacated from those years.

Funny thing is Miami's first game of the year is @ Maryland. That game is going to get a lot more attention than usual.

Oh this is just great. On the list of players alleged to have met Shapiro for illegal benefits is Sophomore UCF star QB Jeffrey Godfrey. There are a lot of athletes who ended up going to other schools who allegedly accepted gifts from Shapiro.

http://sports.yahoo.com/investigatio...ey_allegations

Quote:
Miami booster Nevin Shapiro alleges he provided Jeffrey Godfrey with extra benefits and also had impermissible contact with the quarterback while the Hurricanes were recruiting him. Among Shapiro’s allegations:

• Shapiro gave Godfrey a pair of Nike Air Jordan tennis shoes in 2009, during a visit in which current Miami staffer Sean Allen brought the Hurricanes recruiting target to Shapiro’s $6 million Miami Beach mansion.

• The booster alleges he also gave Allen $200 to take Godfrey to dinner at Japanese steakhouse Benihana.

• Shapiro also alleges he knowingly had impermissible contact with Godfrey a second time, when Allen brought the player to his luxury suite for a Hurricanes game during the 2009 season. Miami assistant basketball coach Jake Morton and Allen were both present in the booster’s luxury box when Shapiro met Godfrey.

Corroborating accounts

• Yahoo! Sports has acquired a photo of Godfrey with Shapiro in the booster’s luxury box during the Hurricanes’ 2009 season.

• Yahoo! Sports also acquired a second photo of Shapiro, Allen and Morton in the booster’s box. Along the left margin of the photo, Godfrey can be seen walking into the background of the picture just as the snapshot was taken.
Former Miami head basketball Haith is also implicated in this. He is alleged to have been close to Shapiro and went to strip clubs with him many times. Haith was just hired by Missouri to be their new head basketball coach earlier this year. This scandal is looking like it will effect more programs than just Miami.

The federal bankruptcy trustee in Shapiro's ponzi case has said he's going to look into athletes who got significant gifts and potentially try to go after them for the money or value of the gifts they received. Most of the players didn't receive significant enough gifts to go after, but Vince Wilfork reportedly received $50,000 and 2 Escalades worth $50,000 each. On Mike & Mike this morning they had on ESPN legal analyst Roger Cossack and he said it was unlikely the trustee has a case against any of the players because the players would have had to had some knowledge that the money they received was through fraudulent activity.

Exactly - that's going nowhere and the trustee should know that.

It's possible the trustee could use the threat of litigation (and the possibility of having to testify under oath) to try and get settlements from some of the players. I could see Vince Wilfork, who received an $18 million signing bonus last year, agreeing to pay $150,000 (with no admission of wrongdoing) to make the whole thing go away.

Most of these players probably had no idea what a Ponzi scheme was to begin with. Modern Miami was practically built on illegal activity (namely cocaine) in the 70's-80's anyway. People down there are used to looking the other way when it comes to criminal activity.

Still, in the age of Facebook, cell phone cams, etc. it's pretty astounding the program got away with with so much dirty stuff, some of it criminal, for such a prolonged period of time.

Not gonna happen - statute of limitations will bar the claims for anyone who received these "gifts" more than 4 years ago. Sorry for being a nerd.

Supposedly the NCAA rules normally only allow violations to be punished within a 4 year statute of limitations too. But I've seen multiple reports today indicating there ae exceptions to that and Miami will probably fits into that exception. So Miami could possibly be punished for incidents dating all the way back to 2002.

I just hope there can be a somewhat quick resolution to this whole thing. I'd like to be able to know how hard Miami is going to get hit. Depending on who you listen to some think the NCAA is going to make an example of us and others think it'll be similar to USC's punishment. They think that the NCAA doesn't want to hurt a big name school too badly because too many parties end up losing money. (And it is a business after all) I don't know what to think other than it's going to get worse before it gets better. I do feel that Miami will be able to recover quickly when all this is over though, however, there has to be reform put into place regarding boosters. This Shapiro dirtbag could potentially be hurting more schools than just Miami with Central Florida, Kansas State, and Missouri all being indirectly effected.

If they're really about education they'll axe it. If they care a little bit about education 5-10 years no bowls. If they don't care at all they'll USC it.

Am I the only one who is rapidly losing interest in collegiate football? That it's a business (not a sport) these days really bums me. Between the BCS bullshit and the one-a-week NCAA violations, I find myself much more interested in NFL this year than usual.

The NCAA won't give Miami the death penalty. I'm thinking it'll be a five year postseason ban/lost scholarships. My biggest fear right now is losing Al Golden. He's a terrific coach.

Even with my team about to take a hit from the NCAA, I haven't lost any interest. It's only a matter of time before we get a playoff system, you have to keep telling yourself that. There is more money to be had with a playoff system and bigger conferences and the NCAA knows that. Just be patient in the meantime. I love pro and collegiate football equally, and it's been that way for me as far back as I can remember. There is no sport like football, I love it so much.

I know ... I'm just saying if it were truly about education the loudest message to send would be that. But we all know its not.

That's about what I'm thinking. A 5 year postseason ban and significant loss of scholarships sounds about right. It'll set the program back quite a bit but they'll be back eventually. There will always be a ridiculous amount of HS football talent coming out of south Florida for Miami to draw from. Though Miami's troubles could really help growing football programs like UCF and USF over the next several years. They'll be able to pluck more HS talent from the region that they otherwise would have.
