I have no doubt it will be a excellent print. When it comes to their top tier titles Warners seems to always do a grade A job. Its only with their catalog releases they seem to not bother with quality.

$40 is too steep for my pockets. I will wait for a lightning deal or Black Friday sale.

Agreed. GoodFellas is about the only A-list Warner catalog title that I don't totally love and that was a while ago.

I'm not normally a fan of preordering but I'm not at all concerned about the transfer we're getting.

I was hoping Walmart or Target would get an exclusive non-deluxe version, similar to the Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind releases. But there hasn't been any mention yet of one.

You can love it the first time but don't let your expectations get the better of you. Or more accurately, don't let our expectations get the better of you

It's a good story that's easy to follow. The cast is great. The music is excellent. It looks fantastic.

All the other goundbreaking this, influential that, changed the course of blah blah blah blah blah can wait.

It's a great film but it's also a damn good movie.

It's certainly not one of those arthouse movies that'll leave you scratching your head. It's told non-linearly through flashbacks, multiple narrators, etc but it shouldn't be hard to follow considering all these movies/tv shows which have borrowed its structure from this film. I feel much of its "greatness" has more to do with its craft and influence, but it's a very good mystery/drama with gorgeous cinematography, great performances, a very original screenplay, and some ahead of its time special effects and makeup work.

Until Touch of Evil's relatively recent canonization, it was generally considered second only to Kane among Welles' work. The only DVD releases it's had in the past (a UK edition and a French edition) have been pretty poor, so there's little doubt that this will be the best the film has looked on home video. So $10 is a bargain for it. It's unfortunate that the studio is dumping it like this, after years of promising a superlative special edition, but at least we're finally getting it.
I guess I'll keep my pre-order then.

That's what I was hoping for Ten Commandments, and no luck on that one.

Yeah, don't remind me of 8 1/2. A total waste of time.

How on earth could anyone consider 8 1/2 a head scratcher or a waste of time? That film was easy to follow even as a teen.

Ten Commandments was $24.99 for the boxset last month at BB. Looks like you missed the boat.

I thought the eventual release of 3-disc Wizard of Oz with all of the bonus discs from the big set was brilliant. I'd much rather have that then a huge box of crap.

Its sad they try and force people who really want a movie to buy these huge sets by holding off on the bare bones releases.

How are they "forcing" you to do anything? Bare bones releases have typically followed, so why not just use patience?

Nice -but only at $45-$50. Warner are pulling our chain with a higher price.

Universal Pictures have this in the UK but they've been very poor with other RKO (King Kong) product although I did like their SE DVD of Citizen Kane which better than Warner's (bright and digitally washed to the extent it was damaged).

RKO 281 is crap and Magnificent Ambersons ain't too far behind for me. It's got nothing to do with the great Kane. Cheapens the set so I'll get the 'normal' version.

Welles fans should note, Touch of Evil gets a Blu-ray release soon in the UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005DDIUYM

Although a Universal property they've licensed it to Eureka! so I guess there's hope for Citizen Kane while Universal concentrate on the 3 disc Smokey and The Bandit 2: Buford T. Justice Sum-Bich Edition

I guess I need to rephrase that. Its sad they try to pressure someone who really wants the movie and is impatient into buying a huge boxset by holding off on the bare bone releases. I kind of thought that idea was implied in my original post.
I was trying to discuss my dislike for this obvious tactic. Of course no one is holding a gun to my head 'forcing' me to buy something. That is just silly to take that literally so why even comment on it.

This is a simple marketing strategy. IMO it stinks. There is no reason to not release both on the same day as most other studio's do. For example Warner released the huge Goonies set Nov 2010. The bare bones release is set to come out Oct 2011. personally I find that ridiculous.

I'm hoping for a region free release for this.

Awesome news! The movie is a masterpiece of the era. Just below The Third Man in Welles catalog, but his performance is bar none.
