It may well be that in 40 years, onnce most of the original fans will be long gone, Star Wars may not have the same impact on the buying public it as now but I suspect it will still find room in a lot of people collection, in whatever format they have then. They might even find they way into the Criterion collection by then?
No argument from me on that. The thing I was pointing to was that the UOT only resonates today, with the oldies like me. Release it and cash in now, wait and lose that income stream forever. Makes no business sense at all to me. I for one, as I have said, have had enough. Even if five years down the line he does another set including the original cut, I am going to be hard pushed to be bothered with it. The SE have been around 14 years, he is getting his wish, the 1977-1983 versions are slowing fading from culture.

Myself, not speaking for others, I will buy Star Wars in the next format that come's along 5-10 years from now, I am that much of a geek I know certain fans like you wish they would provide the older version as well, but the fact that they don't really does not bother me.

Star Wars is the only set of films I have own in every version they were available to for home viewing. Not even Indiana Jones came close but I am a HUGE Star Wars geek. It's just the movies for me but the books, the comics, the collecting. Most people are fans of the movies while I am just nuts about Star Wars

Do you think it's possible that somewhere down the line GL would consider releasing the OUT - as a digital download-only release...? would it make even sense? I just thought of that idea and thought I'd throw it to the wind...

On the other hand, I can definitely see a 3D version sometime in the future.

As has already been noted, the changes to the films made for the 2004 DVD don't exist on film.

They only exist in the digital files. So they really WOULD have to go back to scratch.

Plus there's no film to scan for the AotC and RotS and those look fantastic at their pure 1080p resolution.

Because it's not necessary...

Just redo the colour timing, fix the lightsabers, slugs, etc. and everything will be fine

They could easily rescan the new negative created for the 1997 SE. There were hardly any changes done for the 2004 versions

Why even talk about it? It isn't going to happen. And it won't come out just because he'll die one day. The franchise will be passed down to his heirs, not owned by a corporation. And intellectual property that is owned by a family/heirs traditionally is INSANELY protective of it as compared to intellectual property that is studio owned.

And Katie Lucas, the one most likely to be the public face for the franchsie, the Christopher Tolkien sort of figure once George passes, lashes out against people who attack her father and his intentions quite often.

If George doesn't want to remaster the UOT then you aren't going to see it just in his lifetime, probably not yours either.

I agree with you in principle, that this current generation (essentially, most people under the age of 25) are a disposable generation with collective ADD and no interest in anything (be it film, music or tv) that came out before they were born, or even before they came of age.

Having said that, Star Wars is almost a unique case; I was in an hour long line for the new Star Tours ride this weekend at Disneyland, and I could hear the little kids around me talking about the movies and their favorite characters...and some of these kids born after Revenge of the Sith was released! Star Wars, I think, falls into that same perennial category as things The Wizard of Oz, and Batman and Superman...it is so ingrained in our culture now as to not go away any time soon. It might not have the stratospheric popularity it did on the early 80's when I was a kid, but it will be around and well known for a long, long time.

There were a lot of additional changes, re-renderings, and tweaks of even the stuff that cared forward from the '97 versions.

Let me be blunt as I can be to those debating how the UOT could be cleaned up.

There. Is. Almost. Absolutely. No. Chance. You. Will. Ever. Ever. Ever. See. The. UOT. Officiailly. Released. Again. Home. Video.

Why not talk about how much you'd like to see a Lucasfilm produced remake of all 6 films where the humans are replaced by penguins? And the possibilities of how that could be produced? It is just as likely.

I don't know. I'm not trying to rile or incite, but three years is a long time to work on something that they've said most of the work was done before 2004. I'm not saying that they will or that it's likely, but there's always a chance. Lucasfilm is anything but predictable.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing an UOT with the wires and mattes. It's part of the process of filmmaking at that time. They broke new ground and it's worthwhile to see what was done in that time in history.

However, that's not the topic for this Blu release. Those are my two cents.

Exactly. If it came out would I buy it? In a heartbeat. But it's not on this blu-ray release and there has been no indication whatsoever that it will EVER come out, rendering talking about how it could be produced in a thread about a boxset it isn't part a frustrating waste of time. It isn't on this and likely won't ever be in any future boxset. Everyone needs to just accept the fact and move on.

Lucas just wanted to wait until there was certain amount of market penetration, I'm sure. He pretty much did the same thing with the dvd releases.

At the front gate of Lucasfilm Ranch, the day of its release:

The fans' pain would literally be Louisville Slugger's gain.
