Miami should get the death penalty for this, but its difficult when they are locked in pre-negotiated television and radio deals involving all ACC teams. The NCAA is going to have to walk a fine line with this one. If they are preceived to be too lenient, you could see a bunch of teams walk away - there are enough that aren't happy about the BCS deal that this could form their own organization to sanction sports. Small conferences who are dwindling in numbers as larger conferences expand would be quick to jump into their own, equal share design. If the NCAA is too harsh, they could scare away lucrative TV deals. But of course, when faced with losing small teams or big money, the NCAA is likely to pick big money. They'll go lenient on Miami, take the heat, lose the teams, and march forward. You know Texas A&M is loving all this attention stealing negativity. After their failed move to the SEC, this has definitely taken the spotlight off them. |

SMU wants to join but they don't bring enough to the table. The Big 12 already has a big fan base in the Dallas area with Baylor nearby and plenty of Texas and Oklahoma fans. SMU's basketball team is horrible and makes the league worse. Last year SMU only averaged about 23,000 fans at football games even though their stadium holds 32,000. |

For now they'd just look to add 1 team to replace A&M, but eventually they'll want to get back to 12 teams. I still think at some point in the next couple years there's going to be some kind of conference explosion with the SEC, Pac-12, and Big 10 going to 16 teams and the remaining Big East, ACC, and Big 12 teams combining to form a conference or trying to stay in existence by bringing some teams that aren't currently in BCS conferences into their conferences.

Looks like the punishment current Miami players wasn't as bad as expected. Most only got a 1 game suspension. The only one that might really hurt is top safety Ray Ray Armstrong suspended 4 games. And Miami's first game is a cakewalk. It's game 2 that they play Ohio St.

Texas A&M has officially told the Big 12 they intend to leave the conference on June 30, 2012 if they are accepted into another conference. Fox Sports, which signed a contract with the Big 12 worth over $1 billion in April, could void the contract with A&M leaving, which could lead to the Big 12 suing A&M and it's new conference (which will obviously be the SEC if they accept A&M).

The landscape of college football is changing - and so will the BCS. The Big East and Big 12 will disappear as the other conferences expand to 16 teams each. That will leave the PAC-16 to rule the west, the SEC will cover the south, ACC gets the East, and Big Ten+6 will rule the North. There will be some bleeding between conferences, of course, but otherwise it will be very regional. I wouldn't be surprised if at that time the non-BCS conferences form their own bowl agreement.

It's finally game day, been too long a wait. It's too bad all of today's games are terrible, as evidenced by the fact that the "marquee" game of the day is UNLV (2-10 last year) at #11 Wisconsin. I don't get why ESPN wouldn't put some effort into getting a good game to open the season. I'm not saying they should try and put the best game of the week (LSU-Oregon) on Thursday but at least a game with 2 decent teams like TCU-Baylor or BYU-Mississippi. Still, I'm excited to watch real football tonight.
