Default The Debt Review Thread (Use Spoiler Tags)

The Debt August 31, 2011

Quote:
The Debt is a 2011 drama-thriller film directed by John Madden based on a screenplay written by Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan.[1] The film is a remake of the 2007 Israeli film of the same name by Assaf Bernstein.[1] It stars Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Ciarán Hinds and Tom Wilkinson.

The espionage thriller begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and Stefan (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciaran Hinds). All three have been venerated for decades by their country because of the mission that they undertook back in 1966, when the trio portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington tracked down Nazi war criminal Vogel (Jesper Christensen) in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team's mission was accomplished - or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations.

Originally scheduled for a December 2010 release, the release has been rescheduled to August 31, 2011

I thought it was excellent and while everyone in the movie is great, Jesper Christensen is flat-out amazing.

I thought it was good, but not great. Excellent performances and suspense, but otherwise, there's nothing there for me to want to see it again. I still recommend it, but I'd give it a modest 3/5. It's worth seeing for Jessica Chastain alone, and so is The Help. That girl is beautiful.

It all has to do with dramatic effect...nothing more.

This was better than I expected it to be, and I was looking for it to be north of decent. I of course expected the acting to be great, but the direction and script were pretty solid: I was, though, getting leery of the flashback setup until the climax rectified that and made the meme appropriate. However on a micro-level I do believe that the director/editor went a little overboard in showing scenes 'out of order'. It worked to dramatic effect enough, but wasn't necessary every time it was employed - that's a somewhat minor quibble though, it's not like this was trying to be another Pulp Fiction.

I just saw Sarah's Key last weekend, a movie that deals with one of the same larger themes of this film
[Show spoiler]is truth sometimes better left forgotten?
, though in a pretty different manner. Recommended as a double bill with this picture, if you're into that.

An 8/10 for me right now (that's a solid 4 stars on the poll).

And I saw the trailer for In Time before this showing; I don't know how I haven't heard more buzz on that movie, but that is up there with Drive and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo as one of the better trailers I've seen this year. Definitely looking forward to that one now.

Seconded. She is quickly ascending my list of favorite actresses, with this and her work in Tree of Life (she was one of the better parts of that film, IMO). And she is indeed quite lovely (and not a waif, either). I love me a beautiful woman who can act.

I just got back and honestly, this film better get at least a Oscar nomination. My only gripe is that it wasn't longer. If I could, I would give it 4.5 out of 5.

In no way will this get nominated for an Oscar, I doubt it'll be put up for consideration.

I can see maybe an editing nomination for this; though as I explained above I don't agree with all of the cuts, the film does largely do an effective job with its out-of-sequence structure.

And depending on how her turn in Tree of Life is pushed - and she's got Take Shelter coming later this year - a Supporting Actress nom could, *could* be squeezed for Jessica Chastain, if the role is pushed/positioned that way. I feel she's going to get nominated for something...she's had as good a year as any actress in 2011.

Don't need to although it looks good, it'll be forgotten in no time, it's been released far too early to make an impact on the votes, and the new rules in place make it chances nearly nigh on impossible. Over 5% voting for this to be the Best Picture, over all the Oscar fodder yet to come out, really strongly doubt it.

It might get a few lesser ones, like Editing, sound, even a few Acting nods or a best screenplay (although that might be pushing it), but I just don't see the becoming a name thrown around at the time awards come around.

And since when did an Oscar ever mean a film was great or not, a tone of great films don't get nominated, for reasons purely because of stuff I said above.

Anyway, the film isn't out in the UK

Thumbs up

"THE DEBT" - starring Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain.
[Show spoiler]It appears to be a true story & I thought it was. But in looking around, that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe it was based on similar stories.
(<--- click on at your own risk, tho' not really a "spoiler" per se').

Saw this earlier (1:45pm) & absolutely LOVED IT!! Great movie, GREAT Cast, excellent story. Shot well, Directed
[Show spoiler](<--- John Madden)
superbly, Editing is first-rate as well.

[Show spoiler](you can click on the above to learn the "story" itself, though if you've seen the trailer, you pretty much know that that entails).
(<--- Ok to click on).

Movie: 5 of 5
Cast/Acting: 5 of 5
Story/Execution/Direction: 5 of 5

** PS: The theater I was in was freakin' PACKED!!! Can't remember a more packed theater since I don't know when...! **

(The movie is a remake of the 2007 Israeli drama-thriler of the same name.)
