But it may work out in Walt's favor later, if he can somehow keep himself behind the curtain, while Gus gets taken.
I think he was because he was getting frustrated with Gus. He went to visit him at Los Pollos and couldn't get access to him. He was also angry with him because he took Jesse away and he didn't know where he was and why he had taken him and left Walt to cook by himself. He has tried multiple times to get access to Gus since the beginning of this season and has been getting cut off and all angles. He was thinking about Gus and his whole operation and since he was being cut off at all angles he decides helping Hank out was his way at maybe getting back at Gus.. They didn't show the Los Pollos in Gale's murder file for nothing.

Only the second time Hank looked at the file, right? When Walt was leafing through it, he didn't see the Los Pollos napkin, I believe.

I still don't understand what Walt is trying to do/prove or what his thinking really is. He seems to be relying too much on the idea that Gus views him as irreplaceable. Does he really believe that Gus couldn't find someone else to do a similar job without all the baggage? Also, why are they still cooking the blue meth? I thought Walt and jesse first did that out of necessity because they had stolen that liquid in the big black barrel. Now they have the finest equipment and ingredients to chose from and they're still cooking a product which stands out like a sore thumb and is much more easily recognized and traceable. Walt knows for a fact that the DEA is on the lookout for "the blue" so why not switch it up?
Why do some serial killers deliberately leave clues at the scene and take momentos from their victims?

For some, and perhaps Walt as well, there is a rush derived from the celebrity aspect and a thrill from being able to outmaneuver their persuers. The hunt is better than the kill.

thats not what it is at all with Walt. he just has so much pride in what he does and the fact they kept calling gale a genius and he was the Heisenberg everyone was hearing about pissed off Walt because he knows it's not the case. it wasnt about Walt wanting the case re-opened which will happen, it was about him pretty much letting hank know that gale wasnt all that. if you watch the other seasons walt does shit like this often even if it means a bad outcome. i mean he's rather cook meth than take money from someone, that alone showed his pride right off the bat.

Walt has a subconcious desire to get caught. Many criminals with personality conflicts demonstrate these symptoms.

Example:

Hank: "Jesus Christ Walt, whats in this bag? Its heavy as hell."

Walt: "Half a million Dollars in cash."

Thats not pride. Thats the mouse stepping near the hungry cat.

Walt does have pride issues as well, for sure, but thats not what the BLUE meth is about.

but thats when he did want to get caught. that was when he lost everything and was in a dark place. currently he doesnt want to get caught, that was straight up pride and drunkeness at the dinner table.

Is it just me or is Hank and Jessie the two best characters on the show?

Along with Walt, yes, I would agree.

Last night's episode was fantastic.

i think Jesse is the best actor on the show IMO. Walt is 2nd and then Hank is 3rd for me. the show from top to bottom though is filled with amazing actors.

Hank is really surprising this season. I despised his character the first 2 seasons, but I find myself pulling for him and I really don't care for Gus' character at this point. But what I am sensing is a Hank vs. Walt standoff in the last season, camera pans away, shot fired, the end.

Needs more Badger and Skinny P

I think it is obvious
[Show spoiler]that this is the beginning of the end for Gus. I think we start to see Walt man up a little and take some drastic action. "In order to be boss you gotta be tough." - Eyebrow man

hard to say cause with all the backstory on gus/cartel you can really tell a lot of what motivates gus is hatred of the cartel due to what happened during the pool meeting...

I don't know why, but I'm getting the feeling that Skyler is going to die.

So we're all in agreement: someone is going to die.

Well, you can only go so long without the cast getting hurt. If they keep surviving, there's no real tension, is there?

No, i agree. Someone needs to go. I just thought it was funny that everyone has a different cast member they think is gonna get the axe.
I thought the last couple episodes were a definite improvement over the start of the season. BB takes their time and i like that. Usually.

Didn't they say someone was going to die, or was that just about the first episode? Either way, I just get the feeling it's going to be a revenge kill and/or "don't **** with me" kind of thing
