Sup fellas!
Just recently got back from 2 months on the road with my brother. Went to a Rainbow gathering and some festivals, camped and backpacked along the West Coast, the Washington rainforest, Yellowstone, the Tetons, the Beartooth Wilderness in Montana... visited friends and family all over and of course, stopped at all of the best breweries along the way ![]() Just got caught up on the last 100 pages or so of this thread, glad to see Surf's back ![]() ![]() I've been on a different path in life for the last year or so and after so many magical experiences in recent months, it's weird seeing some of the films that I own and used to love, but really can't connect with anymore. I was in the mood for some fun the other day and watched Armageddon, which used to be a favorite of mine when I was younger. Hadn't seen it in years (also watched Enemy of the State for the first time in years) and it was pretty funny to get a glimpse at the general level of consciousness of society, especially back in the 90's. What a weird and wacky time ![]() Anyways, good to be here again with you guys and catch up on your film reviews ![]() |

![]() Yeah, it's a good thing I tend to just look at the scores for movies that I haven't watched yet. I don't need another movie to be slightly spoiled for me. A part of 'In Time' [Show spoiler] and 'Contagion' [Show spoiler] are enough for me.

Into the Wild - 5/5
One of my favorites. Christopher McCandless knew that a superficial life in society was a trap. He was a passionate, powerful being and he was called into the wild. [Show spoiler] but he loved every moment that he truly lived in freedom. One of the main criticisms about Chris taking off was how he put his family through hell, as well as the fact that he never returned. A huge part of taking off and finding yourself in the "real" world is returning home, seeing your roots and the family that you came from and further solidifying who you are and where you want to be in life. I still need to read the book but I think I remember someone telling me that he was actually ready to leave and head home, but the water levels rose quickly and then he got sick. Sean Penn definitely did a wonderful job on this film, as did Eddie Vedder on the score. Highly recommendedScott Pilgrim vs the world - 4.5/5 Kinda weird and goofy but I really enjoyed this one, lots of fun. The Manchurian Candidate - 3/5 Good, sure, but a bloody boring film indeed. I fell asleep a few times and don't even really remember the ending haha. Taxi Driver - 5/5 Must own classic. Robert DeNiro is excellent as the iconic cabbie Travis who views (and judges) the world from the safety of his cab. He's a voyeur in a world of scum, loses it and goes all rogue badass, does what he feels he needs to do, and then walks away a hero in the end. Awesome. Blue Velvet - 4/5 Saw this a while ago in a film class I was taking and I don't remember too much of it but it was a trippy film for sure. I enjoyed it so I definitely want to revisit this one someday, I remember that Dennis Hopper was awesome! Se7en - 4.75/5 Love it! Hadn't seen it in years and I really enjoyed revisiting this one. The detailed world that David Fincher creates in this one is apparent right from the beginning credits... dark, gritty, violent and relentless. Very well done, the pacing is great, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman work awesome together, and [Show spoiler] is one of my favorite villains of all time. It's a Wonderful Life - 5/5 Doesn't get much better than this. Still haven't seen too many of his films, but I think this is my favorite Jimmy Stewart role. |

Now that Surf is back (part-time it would seem
![]() Kingdom of Heaven Been feeling like watching this one for a little while now, and finally had time today to squeeze in a 3 hour movie. I thought for sure I had reviewed this one before, but when I searched through the thread, all I found was a post that said, "Previously reviewed" and one that said basically "You guys were right, Director's Cut was better than Theatrical" from early 2010. Well, better late than never eh? ![]() For anyone who doesn't know, the movie follows Balian (Orlando Bloom...wait! Don't let that scare you off!) a blacksmith. Balian is in a pretty low place when the film opens. His wife is dead (suicide) and he's pretty zoned out about it. Crusaders from Jerusalem come to town and bring him some unexpected news. He soon sets out with them to the Holy Land to seek absolution of his sins. The theatrical cut of this movie was a "good" movie, but the director's cut is a great movie. It's a good thing that it is the only version available on blu-ray ![]() The film is very well written...aside from some of Balian's INCREDIBLY repetitive dialog late in the film. I don't know if it is the hokey sounding lines, the sheer amount of repetition of it or Bloom's delivery, but it gets a tad irritating. The main characters are all interesting...especially the king (masterfully played by Edward Norton). The battle scenes aren't the best you'll ever see, but they are good. As I've made note of many times, I'm not the biggest appreciator of scores in movies. I can't recall what the music is like in most films outside of the ones with fantastic scores (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings, etc.). I wouldn't say this one is anywhere near those but there are a few musical moments that are memorable. If you still haven't seen it even with all of us talking about this, Troy, Gladiator and Braveheart all of the time...go watch it. I believe last time we discussed it Bearcat still hadn't seen it ![]() Rating - 4.75/5 |

I recently saw Michael Bay's "The Island" on Blu-ray, and I wrote an interpretation. I will link to it because the subject matter is not allowed here, even though I think it should be. If you want to discuss the interpretation, you can do so in the comments section because I really don't want to hijack this thread.
This is not an attempt to get hits on my blog, but to prompt discussion because I have been lacking it lately due to school and other things. I consider The Island Bay's masterpiece, so I obviously I love the hell out of it. http://itsmeknubs.blogspot.com/2011/...-american.html |

Same here. I haven't been in the thread for The Dark Knight Rises since the picture of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman came out and the only thing I have looked at recently in the Avengers thread was the pictures of the guys "looking" at Scarlett's ass.

Obrigado! Nice to see you've enjoyed your summer. And you have a good point about how a shift in perspective can change your opinion on films. Some of my personal favorites just don't hit home anymore. |

I must have hundreds of them.
![]() ![]() I do have a lot of the popular scores ("Star Wars," "LOTR," "Indy," "Gladiator," etc), but my favorites are usually the ones that incorporate rock or techno in them (like "The Italian Job," "The Island," "Gone in 60 Seconds," "MI:2," lots of anime soundtracks, etc). I usually get them if I watch the movie and realize that the music is great. I do have a lot of various artists soundtracks too, but I only get them if they have songs from artists I like. Come to think of it, I haven't bought any of these kinds of CDs from any recent movies. ![]() My full list (I bolded my top faves): [Show spoiler]
