Default hard drive issue on my gaming beast

ok, I Re-installed windows on my gaming machine about 3-4 weeks ago because I hadn't for a while. My secondary hard drive which was needing to be upgraded anyways started having an issues IMMEDIATELY after re-installing. Basically when trying to access a file on the drive by clicking on it it would "hang" for a few seconds or so and then the drive would make a light "click" followed by it going along it's merry way. fearing for it's integrity (and needing more space) I upgraded to another Samsung spinpoint drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo

now this drive does the EXACT same thing. my primary drive has 0 issues with it but after reinstalling my old drive started that issue and the replacement drive that I bought has the exact same symptoms... bad drive???? or could something in the re-install process be causing the drive to maybe overload the buffer or something??

strange thing is that it isn't that really nasty clicking noise that you can hear on youtube videos on people's dying hard drives but rather a real light click just once as it "jolts" back into unfreezing (best way I can describing)

update. I booted up a live linux CD to run instead of windows and for some reason it's not doing it. I can run anything off of that hard disc without any hanging accompanied by said "light click" ... everything just runs. it's only been a few hours of testing but so far I would have had at least ONE hangup... this is weird.

well, re-installed windows and it still has the same issue. sooooo decided to RMA for a replacement from newegg. aaaaand newegg is having me eat the shipping fees and print out a ups label through their site for $9.69!!!!! I have NEVER had a company within the return period make ME pay for the return shipping on a defective item... I've sworn by newegg.com for years but this is garbage... I knew I should have gone through amazon.

Very interesting issue. Something to check are

BIOS: Make sure everything is set properly.

Cables: Make sure the SATA/IDE cable is still good.

Format: Within windows, do you see the drive? If so, try doing a full format on the drive within windows.

Without it being in front of me, those are my current suggestions.

yeah, it's kinda funky. it happens on two different drives

both samsung spinpoints but years apart

1. is a EIDE drive
2. is a brand new SATA drive

both are the secondary drives on my beast (or were, the ide was replaced with the new 1.5 TB sata)

yeah, I've reformatted a couple times. both within windows as well as using GPARTED in Linux

within windows it acts normally but every once in a while hangs and then makes a soft click like the drive head is waking up and un-hangs

strange thing is that it only happens under windows (and only after I re-installed windows last month. before that it never happened. I re-installed again and it still happens) when I boot into linux I can stress that drive to the max and it doesn't do it.

Yeah, one of my drives does sort of the same thing. It will hang for a sec while reading the drive. Ive chalked it up to being either an older drive or how the motherboard handles multiple drives.

It could be your motherboard and how it handles multiple drives. Do you know what board you have or is it a pre-built machine?

yeah, it's the Asus P5Q Pro socket 775
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299

pre-built!!! (gasps in horror)

yeah, might be something like that. the reason I was scratching my head was because it only happened after I re-installed Win 7 (and doesn't happen when I boot into linux)... made me go "huh?" I mean sometimes a drive will hang in Windows 7/Vista (annoying that it seems to do that more often in Win 7/Vista than it ever did in XP) but that soft click started (or at least recognized it) when I reinstalled

Ah ok. I had that board at one point. I ended up replacing it with a Gigabyte DS3 board. I still have that board in a machine and that is the one that occasionally hangs.

It could just very well be an issue with those early 775 board... Don't know.

Im about half way done with a new build.... 2600k

yeah, very well could be the issue. all my smart scans give the drives flying colors so I'm not wildly worried. just annoyed. lol

oooo, new builds are always fun. I'm thinking it's about time for a new one myself. been itching to try crysis 2 of full settings
