I can only comment on my personal experience with the RC-10, not being able to compare to the CF's as I've never heard them. My entertainment room is only about 10 x 14, and I use them for movies primarily, although I do occasionally listen to music.
I find them to be very clean, clear, and full sounding speakers. They also blend quite well with my RC-LCR center. I'm very pleased with the sound quality and after owning several different speakers through the years they are by for the best I've ever owned.
From a technical aspect, all the experts have already chimed in, but I just know I love my current setup. I do plan on upgrading my sub by the end of the year though.

You could always get the RC-10 for now and end up moving them to the rear for surrounds if you find they are struggling to fill your room. Then you could purchase RC-LCR's to fill the front soundstage. Believe me, your going to want a 5.1 set up before long.

How do the RC-10's sound at low volume levels? I have heard quite a few people say since they are a warm sounding speaker, the dialog of the movie isn't clear at low volume levels. Another person said the RC-10's don't shine until higher volume levels. What are your thoughts because I'll be completely honest with yah. Most of my content will be watched at low volume levels so that is very important to me.

I think the RC-10s sound fine at low volumes (I use mine as nearfield monitors with my computer) but of course I think they sound even better as they get louder.

My room is not quite that large...something like 2350cu ft or so, but even in just stereo the RC-10s are very capable. Like I said on audioholics if you were able to get 3 RC-LCRs that would be perfect, although I understand the budget limitations as well, since I can't afford to pick up pair of those right now either

I also just posted on AH about two other options:
3x RC-10 across the front
or
2x RC-LCR and just get a third later

Well, you have to remember that dialog in a movie will primarily be heard in your center channel. Most of the effects will be concentrated to your L/R and surrounds, and sub for low end of course. I too listen quite often in low volume levels, so as not to disturb my wife who is normally watching tv in the next room. I have noticed that when dialog pans from the center to one of the right or left channels (RC-10's) I do not discern much of a difference in sound level or quality. Others may have noticed a difference but I don't personally. I think the issue of dialog degredation more often has to do with the source of the material. I have experienced some movies where dialog would be subdued, but its not the speakers fault. As long as your speakers are level matched you should be good. That's my humble opinion and I'm sticking to it.

All energy speakers sound warm, and being a former energy owner I never had problems with my energy speakers at low volumes. Which I do listen most of the time also.

I have found that the RC-LCR's perform well at low volumes. They also have the added benefit of dedicated mid-range speakers.

I used to own the RC-10's (I traded up to the LCR's later) and I do recall that they did tend to sound slightly better at louder volumes, but it wasn't as though they lost anything when turned down. I just prefer a slightly louder volume when listening and I felt the bass punch a bit better when they were turned up.

Hey Blu, I think at least in some small part the AVR might even have something to do with it. For example, ever since I purchased my new Integra, I've noticed a slight improvement in sound quality at lower volumes, but it has to do with the Dymanic EQ (I think that is what it's called) function in the receiver that boosts up some frequencies a bit in order for them to sound a little more dynamic at lower volumes.

Otherwise, Id say get the RC-10s. If he could find RC towers that would be even better. Or Oliviers idea about the 3 LCRs would be nice too.
I hadn't realized how big the room was and that he'd be going without surrounds. If he's not opposed to going used, you could probably find a pair of RC towers for cheap. Or order the RC-70s from Vanns, but that's getting into a whole other price range.

One other option is this pair of used Veritas 2.3i on Audiogon.

Good call on the CF-70's. I don't even have a sub yet but my windows rattle all the time due to the 70's while watching movies. They sound great and pack a punch.
