Default Why do I always have to watch from the very beginning?

Why can't I play some movies from the point where I last saw it? And what's that got to do with copyright protection?

It have nothing to do with copy protection

Most movie come with Java Applet that load themself into memory. Most of studio include the ability of Bookmarking on those title (Sony and Lionsgate for example). Since the Applet must be loaded in ram each time you put the movie that prevent it from restarting...

Probably a PS3. I reaaaaally hate that thing about it. It can however remember where you left of with videos saved or your hard drive but why not on discs that have been ejected (and sometimes discs that haven't)? Frankly I would rather have this feature than in game XMB

BD's authored with advanced content (think Java apps e.g. POTC) will not resume from the stop point on any player. This is true for Blu-ray, as well as HD DVD.

BD's not authored with advanced content will resume play from the stop point, provided the player is designed to permit this. I had thought this true of all Blu-ray players since it does so on my Sammy 1200 (and all SD DVD players handle this simple task), but it has been pointed out to me that some Blu-ray players will not resume from stop for any disc.

I use my laptop, WinDVD and PowerDVD. Some movies, such as Ice Age Melt Down, remember where it left off. Others, such as Spiderman, always start from the very beginning.

See my post above yours. Ice Age isn't authored with advanced content. Spiderman is.

By giving up resume playback, what is the advantage of using Advanced Content? I don't see anything special from Spiderman that uses Advanced Content. It only has 2 trailers and no special features. IceAge that doesn't use Advanced Content has special features.

That's the one feature from my old Sony DVD player that I miss, mine could remember where up to 6 discs left off.

I haven't seen too many players that have great memory.

Typically advanced content would be a game, like Liar's Dice on POTC, or PiP or some such. Assuming you're talking about SM3, I can't see anything, but something's there since the load time is hellacious - a sure sign of advanced content.

The advantage is in the eye of the beholder. For me, I just want the movie. Other's value the extra stuff. Ideally, the players should be able to do both and it's a known, unresolved problem for all players - BD and HD DVD.

Don't I know it! My Phillips handled about six, as well. My 1200 - only one.

Not true as long as you don't turn off your PS3 when you stop playback it will remember where it left off. If you power it down it will lose track.

I just checked mine again to make sure.

There's a reason why we're called "Early Adopters". I suspect that over time this will be resolved through firmware updates and newer players, but for now I say we push for titles like Sony's that have the bookmark feature (which I love, btw).

My sony BDP-301 doesn't do this either. Not exactly sure why but it really hasn't bothered me.

My last dvd player, a philips dvd-recordable player doesn't do it either.

However my first dvd player, a cheap ge I got back in 1999 does it, and will hold a possintion even if powered off. It will only lose the bookmarked splot if another disk is placed in it. Even if you remove the same disk, then place it back in there, as long as you didn't put another disk into it It would remember where you last left off.

cyberlink asks if I want to continue playing it from last point or start new.

Think you can set it either way though without the pop up, but I like it asking.

I have a PS3 and I hope that a future firmware upgrade would allow the PS3 to resume the film's last play point. I don't know if that is possible with a firmware upgrade.

When I stop a film, I also turn off my console. Doesn't make sense to leave it on. Maybe this can be resolved in the future.

#1. Why not just check the time at which you stop the playback? After all, you will most likely sit to finish that content within a couple of days and using the "chapter selection" and "chapter skip" abilities on these advanced technologies only takes a max of 10 seconds to get to where you were.

#2. Doesn't anybody ever sit down to watch a whole movie these days? How often do people sit down with the sole intention of watching 1/3 of a film today, 1/4 in 3 days, and the other 2/5 some unforseen duration down the road? Even stranger is the comments that I've heard in the past about people watching part of one film, then part of another, then another, then a fourth, maybe even a fifth, then coming back to the first?!?!?! What the hell?

Films are made to be watched in their entirety, from beginning to end, in one sitting. I find that splitting a film into two viewings detrimentally takes away from the enjoyment of the experience. Hence the reason that I say, to hell with resuming playback. It's a problem that already has a quick and simple solution (see #1). There are so many other things for manufacturers to deal with in getting these players optimized that this topic is rather pointless.

I knew that humanity was getting lazy, but is that extra 10 seconds really that much of an inconvenience? It seems as though 10 seconds takes up a large percentage of the 24 hours alotted to every day.
