Default Need PS3 hard drive help (PS3 FAT 60 GB)

Hi Everyone,
I need some advice and help for my situation, I have a PS3 FAT and it has the 60 GB HD in it, and it is full, and I am running out of things I can delete, I don't really want to get a new PS3 because there is nothing wrong with this unit aside from the little HD LOL, so I was wondering, what is the best HD to use and where can I get one? also how do you swap them out to carry over all your info? I have never done this before and need more HD space bad, especially now that I read RE4 and RE CV is coming and it is download only.

Thanks

There's no best HD, just get one from a company that you trust (that depends from person to person). You'll also need a 3.5" (the laptop size). I chose Seagate, and got a 320GB for around $50 or $60 on Newegg. You might be able to find a deal at any electronics store as well. I know a lot of people have 500GB and bigger, though I'm not sure what the limit is, if there is one. Another thing you want to look out for is speed. I have a 5400 rpm drive. Maybe someone else can verify if 7200 rpm works well in it.

Changing them out is VERY easy (search YouTube for plenty of videos showing you the process), you just need the right size phillips head screwdriver. If you strip the screws, it'll make your life a lot more difficult. You'll also need some sort of flash drive or external HD to transfer your media. You can do a straight backup of everything and restore to the new system, or just bring things over manually and re-install your game data, etc.

These answers were a bit general, so if you have specific questions, let me know.

Get a Laptop hard drive 2.5 SATA 5400 RPM drive. They are dirt cheap and you can probably get a 500GB or even a 750GB for around $50 to $80 bucks. Check places like amazon or newegg.

Important things to remember when doing the hard drive upgrade:

-Be very careful when un screwing the screws on the hard drive housing case. There are 4 screws which are very easy to strip. I know because it happened with me when I upgraded my old 60GB hard drive. I ended up just buying a new PS3 internal hard drive housing case from someone on ebay for $20 bucks.

Here is a video of someone doing a hard drive upgrade:

I'd strongly suggest though that you sell your 60GB PS3 and going to a PS3 Slim though. The older phat PS3 models are known for eventually dying from YLOD and since your PS3 is out of warranty you will have to make that decision of paying $150 to send it in for repair to Sony or just buying a new PS3 Slim. Sell your PS3 on somewhere like craiglists or ebay and you can probably still get $150 or $200 for it. I sold my old working PS3 60GB last January on craigslist and got $266 for it.

Here are a couple hard drives I found which are decent prices:

Samsung 750GB:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HN-M75.../dp/B00535CUH8

Seagate 500GB:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Moment.../dp/B001R4BBL0

Stay away from the 7200 RPM hard drives. They will cause heating problems especially on the older phat PS3 models.

Also you won't really see that much of a performance increase or faster load time with some PS3 games.

The only hard drive that I have seen successfully give better load times with PS3 games are solid state hard drives which are very expensive right now.

Thanks a lot for all the info and links, but does the FAT PS3 still have some advantages over the Slim or no? and if I were to get a slim, how do I transfer my system info over to that system? this is all confusing LOL.

The main advantages the 60GB PS3 have over any of the PS3 Slim models are:

-4 USB slot compared to 2 on the PS3 Slim models.
- Full backwards compatibility on the PS3 60GB to play old PS2 games. Although I don't understand why some people still cry & moan about the PS3 Slim no longer having this ability. Especially when so many of the great classic PS2 games are being remastered in HD and released at decent price. When I had my 60GB PS3 I utilized this feature maybe 3 or 5 times to play GTA Vice City and Shadow Of The Colossus and within 15 minutes of playing each games I just gave up because of the horrible graphics and crazy save system for games. More simply put it was like after watching a sporting event in HD and then switching the channel to standard who the heck would literally go back to standard def after seeing the better quality.
- Memory card reader slots for SD & micro sd cards.
- The ability to play SACD's. Again another nearly obsolete audio format which was mainly popular with audiophile's.

The transfer process is pretty simple. You have 2 options which are both in the system settings in the PS3. Which are data backup and data transfer. Both are pretty self explanatory when you start the process. But I think using the back up hard drive option is better. Just make sure you have a big enough external hard drive like at least 100GB's to backup your current data on your PS3 and make sure your external hard drive where you are backing up your PS3 hard drive to is formatted to FAT 32.

don't bother getting a new drive faster than 5400rpm...the PS3 won't utilize the boost in speed.

Ehh if I'm in his situation. I'd just go with the $50 500GB if I were to keep the 60GB PS3.

Upgrading to a $96 1TB internal hard drive doesn't make sense right now. I'd just spend a extra $150 and get a new 160GB PS3 Slim which is more than ample space and your getting a quieter PS3, a PS3 which is more reliable and still under warranty should something go wrong.

I am actually leaning more towards this, I want a new PS3 Slim, but I just can't see buying a new one now when mine is working fine, plus maybe closer to the Holidays the Slim might come down in price, or might be some really good deals, I think I read Best Buy had a real good deal on a new one a few months ago, now to find a good 500 GB HD for $50, from what I have been googling though, it seems that WD is the better brand to stick with, is this true? or doesn't really matter? but, the 160 GB new slim is probably more than enough space for me, it is 100 GB's more than I have

Plus the whole transferring is going to be a pain, I have 2 external drives but they have a lot of stuff on them already, so I can't re format to FAT 32.

Smart move by waiting for Black Friday and the holidays for some great bundle deals. Hopefully your 60GB PS3 isn't showing signs of dying anytime soon.Like the rear fans kicking in and sounding like a jet engine.

What you can also do as you get closer to buying a new PS3 Slim is take some pictures of your PS3 60GB and put a ad on your local craigslist just to see if you get any interested buyers and what they are willing to pay for it. I'd say in the ad though $200 and low ball offers will be ignored.

Plus I could always take out my new HD from my FAT PS3 and place it in my new Slim one when I get it(that would just be a direct swap right, no formatting because it will be leaving 1 PS3 and going into another correct?) so it looks like a 500 GB is what I want to get, now to try and figure out HOW to move my crap over, I read I can just re download the stuff I bought from the Store, but I am more concerned with themes/wallpapers and game save really, and it seems I better make darn sure I have a good, small, phillips head screw driver.

Thanks Everyone for all the help, links, and suggestions by the way.

1 more thing LOL, I do not hear a Jet taking off yet.

Unfortunately, that hard drive is formatted to that specific PS3. So you would have to reformat the drive again for use on your new Slim.
