you're right in the fact that a date has not yet been set on when the 2.0 upgrade will be released for PS3, but at CES, Sony did make the official announcement that an upgrade will be available for PS3 to make it 2.0 compliant in the coming months.

also, PS3 will pass dolby trueHD, but no DTS HD MA. That is also said to be slated for a future firmware update as well.

is it sad that i know more about ps3 and its capabilities than most, and i have never once owned any generation of a playstation?

ugh....haha

I don't fully understand, I'm considering buying a BDP1400 for £239. Now I am aware that it is Profile 1.0, and Samsung say that it is upgradeble firmware, surely this means that I can upgrade to the later profiles, can someone help me understand a little more, or point me in the right direction... thanks!

you're a little bit confused i think.

the samsung is profile 1.0. that is the best this player will be. it will not be able to support profile 1.1 or 2.0 because both of those need internal memory or hard drive space. the samsung has neither.

so with this player, you will never be able to use the PiP function on some of the newer discs, nor will you be able to utilize the BD Live or 2.0 features that you can use while connected to the internet to get ringtones, movie trailors, etc.

now for me, all that stuff is useless. i dont have any plans on watching director commentary while the movie is playing. this player works great for just watching movies, thats it.

when samsung says it can upgrade its firmware, thats basically its ability to upgrade the software inside the machine which allows it to play some of the newer blu ray discs that have a different video codecs or the newer java blu ray discs.

the only machine that can upgrade profiles is the ps3. the ps3 started out as a profile 1.0 machine, upgraded to 1.1 (which is its current profile), and will be upgraded to profile 2.0 in the future with no definite release date.

so all in all, if you're looking for a player that will be able to take advantage of all those extras like PiP and BD live, stick with a ps3 or wait for standalone players to come out with the new profile 2.0 later this year. if all you want to do is watch movies and thats it, the samsung is fine choice.

Most helpful, to be honest I have an Xbox360 too, so I download most trailers through that, so no biggy for me. If I buy this player will it be able to play all Blu-ray DVDs, or will eventually have to upgrade the player again?

n.b I'm not too interested in commentaries, PiP, and Live content.

i do the same with downloading trailers through my 360.

just to be certain though, i'd do a little more research on all PiP and BD Live features just to be sure there isnt one single thing that really strikes you and interests you. I listed a few of the main features of 1.1 and 2.0, but i'm sure there are a few more that i'm not completely aware of or heard about.

This player WILL play all Blu-ray discs. To insure this, the samsung has an ethernet port on the back for you to update firmware through the internet or by burning the firmware update on a cd and putting that in the player and do it manually. A lot of people seem to have complaints that they aren't able to play certain new blu ray movies, but 9 times out of 10, they just dont have the latest firmware installed. I havent had a run in with any blu ray movie to date not playing or loading. all have worked perfectly.

so yeah, do a little more research on all the features of 2.0 and 1.1, and if none of them strike your fancy, this blu ray player will work just fine for you.

I'll back this up too. I haven't had any problems playing anything so far. And, I could care less about commentaries and other things that 1.1 and 2.0 give you. I bought the player to watch movies... bottom line.
