STAR WARS dropped the awesome documentaries THE BEGINNING and EMPIRE OF DREAMS, as well as all the trailers, found on the DVDs so, as cool as the BD set is, it doesn't qualify as "best of 2011" right there. The LotR box drops nothing..

Yes, but Star Wars added several days worth of all new never before seen bonus features, and LotR added nothing.

A lot of the comments I've read on the Star Wars extras have been along the lines of "why did I bother", though, or "I wish I hadn't spent the extra money". Unrendered animatics and clips from other people's TV shows? Not my idea of must-haves. (I'm not applying that to the movies themselves.)

On the other hand, I think LotR did add something. I haven't bought it yet myself, but doesn't it include the documentary (Costa Boates, I think?) that was on the Limited Edition DVDs? Very few people saw that release. So it's not absolutely new, but it'll be new to most people who buy the set.

For me, Star Wars wins bonus points over LotR in one aspect of packaging: It didn't put its extras on DVDs, with all the disappointing resolution and region coding issues that engendered. (In all other respects, I think LotR is streets ahead.)

But when you think about it, how many new documentaries does one want to watch (about any movie!), when they only really talk about the same things and use the same interview clips and outtakes?

Indeed... I'm not really an extras person so may not be qualified to talk, but when people complain about LotR not having any new special features, I just think what more could you really want? It seems a bit like people just want more for the sake of it.

Agreed about the DVD thing though, those extras should have at least been ported onto a BD, 1 per film, it'd save tonnes of space.

It also added NOOOOOO!, a new terrible Obi Wan scream, and God knows what else.

It's a shame Peter Jackson didn't add a long NOOOOO after Frodo told Sam to F off. The same exact Nooooo in the new version of Jedi, it's so good there isn't a single movie it doesn't enhance.

And my LOTR EE trilogy seems to be taking up the same amount of space as had they released just 3 BDs in the set with each film and all of its corresponding extras on 1 complete disc each.

I'm always with the DVD argument since they neither take up more room being on several discs nor would the quality of the material be enhanced by BD playback. All extras were filmed in SD and are impossible to present in HD anyways.

EDIT: Ok, maybe the cases are a fraction of a pubic hair thicker than a standard BD case. But, seriously. To say that they could have "saved a tonne of space" is astronomically over-exaggerating the scenario.

Yeah, I had no problem with the dvd extras on this set either. It has no impact on the resolution of the content at all.

There are quite a few "NO"s in LotR too.

I used to love Star Wars..but after rewatching them this weekend, I have realized LOTR has ruined that franchise for me.

I still love them both a whole bunch.

I don't feel the need to put movies head to head in a battle to the death. All of my movies share the same shelves, and they get along just fine.

The Lord of the Rings already had worth while bonus features, and many at that. The documentaries that were worth watching on the Star Wars DVDs have been removed, and no new insightful documentaries have been included. So which approach is better?

Still didn't stop tons of people moaning that they were included in the set, and that they didnt want all those DVDs again as they already owned them from the previous LotR sets.

Yet again another example of how people like Lucas are damned if they do and damned if they dont. Whatever way you look at it, people will always complain, so what difference does it make

I have both sets and I enjoy the star wars one a hell of a lot more than the LotR as I didnt even bother with the bonus discs as I already seen everything on them. So yes Star Wars is the better deal because it actually has stuff that I haven't seen and want to watch
