Nobody out there is claiming that the PS2 is the wave of the future, or that it is the consumer friendly choice right now.

You also don't have developers secretly ditching the PS2 in the background while telling the world that they are standing strong on development for it.

This is despicable.

It saddens me to see that people are either so jaded they don't care or are just too happy about Blu doing well to give a crap about unsuspecting buyers, who do not and never have deserved to be punished just because they bought into a format.

While I appreciate your ability for being a consumer advocate, this is just the nature of business. I'm going through this process right now. My contract on my cell phone just expired. I WANT a new phone, but am scared to jump in again for fear that just when I sign the deal, 30 days later a better model comes out. Boom, unless I buy the phone out right, which is silly to pay $200 more, I'm stuck with this phone for 2 yrs when something cooler was just around the corner.

Heck, I'm scared to buy a Mac or upgrade my ipod because I know as soon as I do, Mr. Job's is going to announce something cooler.

This happens every day, all the time.

SOmebody jumping in to HD media, SHOULD do their home work, it shouldn't be an impulse buy at all right now. If they don't, then thats the risk, and NATURE of the business.

What people like Graffeo aren't understanding is that consumers have had to buy NEW HD-ready TVs for this! When Video and later DVD came out, they could plug the new kit directly into the existing set, and it worked. But HD is not the same, and generally speaking those who've already purchased expensive HDTVs are NOT going to be swayed into a dying format purely because it has a trailer-trash price tag.

Buying into HD-DVD now is like buying a ticket onto the Titanic after it hit the iceberg!

When it comes down to it, people are responsible for their own purchases. For example, if I know that a Lada has a short lifespan, my friends who asked me about buying a Lada will get me trying to talk them out of it. Strangers who want to buy a Lada, it's none of my business.

If a Lada were to be more prone to cause accidents and injure other drivers in other cars, I'd expect regulatory bodies to step in. If noone does anything, I might write to the newspapapers to inquite.

In this case, it's just about watching movies. If strangers want to buy players with a shorter lifespan, I can't find a reason to stop them. And besides, at most, they've overpaid for an upscaling DVD player, which isn't necessarily the end of the world.

Things are unfolding pretty much as the last days of the previous betamax vhs war. It doesn't make any difference what happens now. The only thing I'd do is that if friends ask me now what player to get, while I'd say wait until the format war is resolved previously (except for the gaming crowd that wanted a PS3 anyway), now I'd say : "I can't think of any risk left in buying a BD player" along with "I expect it's almost impossible to see how the HD DVD format can turn this around, so don't buy those formats or disks".

But that's only in passing conversation, will avoid heated arguments (there was an x360 owner who liked his KK disk), as the format war doesn't consume every facet of my life, even if watching this unfold from jun2006 has always been very interesting to me (from a business strategy view).

wow 85% is a huge victory! Is that the biggest we've ever had? I expected maybe 75% didn't think the fallout of Warner's announcement would hit so quickly!

Good to see it has

85:15 is a phenomenal percentage, but it came with a BOGO, and the Warner announcement was fresh on people's minds.

90:10 may be possible...but I seriously doubt it will happen by February. It's not like Blu-Ray has a series of blockbusters coming in that time.
I don't know why people keep saying BOGO. There wasn't a Buy one Get one free sale. It was a reduced price sale and most of the titles were not Half Off. I only bought one Title at $20, with the BOGOs I could have gotten Tow for $20. There is a sale, and it is still going on, but not a BOGO. BTW. There is an HD DVD sale going on also and none of the titles as of last night were in the top 100.

Both sides has a BOGO/sale and we have had these in the past. never before has it had this much of an impact on the charts! THis is obviously more than just a sale, and some good releases. This is a huge victory for Blu-ray.
I hope Paraversal sees this and they get it in their thick skulls that it's time to change.

Well, in this week's Nielsen HD-DVD will be a "teen ager". By June, it will be a "single-digit-midget". Puny indeed.

An amazon bogo might swing things by 5% either way, and that's only if it's a bogo that resulted in lots of top 10 titles for a whole week.

The typical amazon bogo of clearing out old titles makes very little impact.

85:15 is likely because of the warner shock to the red system. Next week is going to be 70s again unless there's a big title.

The BOGOs from the prior week were so huge that they had lots of carryover.

The same thing happened for HD-DVD the prior week.

So no, there wasn't a BOGO that week per-se. There was still an impact from a BOGO on the numbers.

The fact is 90% of movie are sold at Best Buy and the like, and Best Buy have seen a lot of return from the HD DVD. Even if Canada isn't included in those stats. I can tell you can in Montreal it's extremely hard to find a copy of Blade Runner on Blu-Ray.. they are all sold out... everytime, but all store got plenty of HD DVD version

I Bought the last Resident Evil Trilogy Boxset at Futureshop Downtown Montreal, they are some BluRay that make the top 10 at the same store... too since about Xmas...

Your are starting to exibit the same kind of dyslexia that Lee Stewart at AVS has. When you go from 34% to 15% in pretty much a week, you are dead. They just have not covered you with dirt.

Side note, I went back to the last HMM to make sure all my dates were correct. Anyways, anyone catch Disney's ad that says "Disney Continues To Dominate The Preschool Category"? Someone bragging about dominating preschool made me laugh.
Do you realize how much money Disney makes in the preschool catagory? It ain't no small pennies.

All the talk about Uni and Para switching sides is great, but it's not going to happen right away. There is still a contract to get out of and inventory to move out. It is going to happen, but don't think it will due to the sales numbers.

Agreed. HD DVD isn't only dead, it's sitting in the corner starting to rot.
