I guess I've purchased 48 of this years' titles..... but there is plenty of time left in the year

I need to stop buying, and start waiting for the November sale, but some titles I just can't wait for.

Bid's closed. Has been since the 12th. A penny short of 1700 may seem like a lot, but the winner's essentially paying 10 bucks per Criterion, even though they're DVDs.

At first glance, I would say it is someone who is selling most of them in hopes of a BD upgrade (as most of the list, probably half or so, is available on BD now) but then when looking at the titles.... he lists "The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons" on DVD, so there is a decent chance that he wasn't buying Blu-rays at the time if its release.

He also lists Make Way for Tomorrow, and Louie Bluie, so he hasn't had those for that long.... that's for sure!

Interesting what people do I guess

EDIT:

It was one bid for $1699 so I bet that was the "Buy it now" price..... the winning bidder has 1400+ feedback, so I'm guessing it's a re-seller who will mark them at $12-$15 each, rape someone on the shipping charges, and charge even more for the OOP ones.

Bought House and The Naked Kiss this morning on ebay, both around the £16 mark ($10ish). Seen House on dvd, a weird yet inventive 'horror' piece and a good addition to my small but growing Criterion collection. I was outbid on Shock Corridor which is a shame as I love that film, The Naked Kiss is a blind buy, anyone have any thoughts on it?

If you love Shock Corridor, you'll love The Naked Kiss, seeing as they're both Fuller films, and star Constance Towers. I enjoyed both, but then I'm a B-Movie fan.

Paris, Texas was a BD. Only one out of all 171 titles.

Yeah that's why I went for for it, love the hard boiled pulpy B movies of the 50s and 60s, in fact while were talking of Fuller I also loved the Criterion dvd of White Dog, hopefully that will be in line for an upgrade in the near future.

Next on my hitlist will probably be Shock Corridor, Battle Of Algiers and Days Of Heaven, especially the latter in time for Tree Of Life.

Also another I haven't seen is Kubrick's The Killing. I'm a bit hot and cold on Kubrick, I'm on the fence whether to splash out to see it.

I'm loving Che, I think it is Steven Soderbergh's masterpiece. for something so unconventionally constructed and edited, they were able to make every nuance interesting. Also interesting that they never idolized Benicio in the role, we don't get many clear polished/stylized shots of him, he's always in large groups or getting business done.

I've managed to pick up 46 of the 2011 titles that have been released so far. I've got the December releases pre-ordered and will grab the Sept-Nov titles during the B&N sale. there are a couple titles in which I have no interest (fat girl, life during wartime, Salo), so the question is, do I pick them up just to be a completionist?

I kinda fell asleep watching it. Mind you, I get up at 5 every morning. It was pretty, but I really dind't enjoy it. I'm not giving up on Malick yet, as I am interested in Badlands and Tree of Life. The New World and Days of Heaven just didn't interest me.

I know those are on BD, I own 8 1/2. I was point out that out of his entire Criterion Collection, he had a single BD, and was selling it off. I just found it amusing that he had a single CC BD. I wasn't saying it was the only title available on BD, it was just the only one he had.

Talk about answering your own question. The Killing will almost certainly wind up in your 'good Kubrick' pile (and it sounds like you'll really like Killer's Kiss too).

Here's the .xls of the 2011 list. Fill in an "x" in the column if you want it to count them for you.

$10 is a lot of money for used DVD's. If he's selling that many they should be discounted much more than that, imo.

I thought I was the only one OCD enough to create a spreadsheet. Due to the influx of B&N sales this year, I have 35 of the 70 so far. There's a fair number of the the ones coming up that I'm eyeing as well.

Still trying to determine at what point "Resume Playback" was first introduced. I've not been actively checking every title, but have been loosely keeping track. So far, I have that it's between Sanjuro (3/23/10) and Black Narcissus (7/20/10). So, one of these dates/titles will be the first to employ it:

4/20
Summer Hours
Vivre Sa Vie

4/27
Ride with the Devil

5/11
M

5/18
Walkabout

5/25
By Brakhage
Stagecoach

6/15
Mystery Train

6/22
Close Up
Red Desert

6/29
Everlasting Moments
Leopard, The

If anybody has info on which of the above has "Resume Playback" that would be great. Thanks.

Watched "Still Walking" last night. What a beautiful film. It's a simple story in my opinion, but in this case, simple makes it meditative and and subtle shifts keep the story moving to its ultimate conclusion. I honestly cannot recommend this film enough, it's beautifully shot, acted, directed and is simply wonderful.
