Default DLNA streaming issue

I'm firmware current. I thought I had done everything correctly. Seem to have done most of it right because I can access my PC files from the cross-media bar.

All my artists are there. I can open those and get to each album and open that folder. But when I do I get the message "There are no files" And they are absolutely on my PC

Did I mess up the setup some way? Suggestions?

I assume you're trying to play music.. are your files in a compatible format ?
I think mp3, mp4, atract and wma are supported.

You can share media in Windows XP using the library function (formerly Windows Media Connect) in Windows Media Player

If you have Windows Media Player 11 go to tools - options - library - configure sharing, click the check box to share your media.

Search for a Media Server on the PS3 and it should pop up in windows as an Unknown Device, select to allow it.

To select folders you would like to share click on [Monitor Folders

I get the same thing. Can the PS3 not play MP3's? That's what all my music is ripped in.

The PS3 plays MP3s fine.

What are you using for a media server? You may be experiencing issues with your firewall, where you can see the files, but not play them. Alternatively, there may be some types of encodes that are not supported... someone who knows more may comment on this. Things like variable bit rate encodes come to mind.

I use TVersity media server. Everything works great. 11,000 MP3s at the touch of my fingers.

I use WM11 and it works fine with everything.

The PS3 will only pick up files in your shared folders. In Vista this is the folder that you called your PC. Mine for example is RichieB1971.

Tversity is nice, but I don't like the way it displays folders/files and if you change something like move a file, you have to do a refresh which takes about a week on my laptop.

Tversity = PC only.

I got that MediaLink from NullRiver (for Mac). I downloaded it, installed it, and attempted to stream, but kept getting those errors. Before I could troubleshoot the issue, the lame-ass 30 minute trial expired (30 minutes? WTF?). It seems to have a LOT of limitations, and I'm not paying $20 just to find out it's still mediocre even when it works.

Apple's Time Capsule comes out in 2 weeks... I'm wondering if it has an integrated media server...

Technically-speaking, I could probably try Tversity because I keep Parallels/XP up at all times on my iMac. Might try that.

Try hitting "triangle" and select display all?

I'm using MediaLink and aside from the first version I grabbed not liking my AAC files, it's been fine.

What sort of problems were you having?

The only problems I have with Media Sharing is when it's enabled it gets disconnected and then my NAT type connection changes from Type 2 to Type 3. I stream my videos and music perfectly fine but it would have been great if it didn't do that.

Oh, and I'm also using WMP11.

I seem to possibly be having the same kinds of problems. When my PS3 boots up and searches automatically for media servers it somehow disconnects other devices on my network like the 2 laptops I have in my living room. I'll also get random disconnects to my network when playing virtually anything (movies, music, etc.). I don't know if I need to add anything to my router to "lock in" my PS3 to it so it will recognize it better. Any tips?

Nope, still don't know how to fix this issue. It disconnects but then it connects back automatically. There is something going on there? Are you using WMP11 too?

I was using WMP11 for a while and it worked ok. Then I switched to TVersity and it seems like it loads movies a lot quicker. But then I started getting disconnected from it too. I'm only getting around a 60-65% signal strength from my wireless router which is down the hall (not that far away) so I don't know if that's contributing to any of these disconnecting problems I'm having. I'm currently researching anyone in town that would wire my living room with CAT5 so I can connect to my router wired and get 100 mb/s.

I had a similar problem when I connected an external HDD via a USB port and this was the cure. Selecting the drive normally let me navigate the directory structure on the drive and allowed me to reach and select the lowest level folders but none contained any files. Utilizing the "display all" option to enter the HDD directory structure did the same thing but when I reached the lowest level folders all fo the files were present.

Nah, I doubt it's because of your signal. I have 70% signal from my router. It has to be something else.

Well, I can see MediaLink on the PS3, even now (I haven't uninstalled it). Of course, now that the trial is over, I can no longer browse the files, and I've forgotten the exact error message. But when I was using the demo, I could browse my music, but if I selected anything to play, it would give me an error saying that operation couldn't be completed (or something along those lines). Didn't matter if I was trying to play an album, a single track, a playlist... same issue.

I thought it might possibly be a firewall issue, but considering I can SEE the files and even get info on them, I suspect this is not the case. Any thoughts?

I was having SERIOUS problems with chopiness with wireless streaming to the PS3 when the mpeg 2 video stream exceeded about 24 mb/s, so I went wired. Eh... not so much on the 100mb/s I got mine wired with cat6 and hardly ever saw over about 50% usage on it when everything was 10/100...

After I put in a HTPC, the 10/100 was too freakin slow for file transfers, so I restructured to gigabit... and learned something I did not know.... Am I the only one that didn't know that the PS3 has in internal Gigabit connection??? at least my gigabit switches all recognize it at 1000!

I haven't really figured out what good this will do me, after all, it is still restricted by the speed of the 10/100 router to the internet... I can only see the gigabit speeds when transfering files with the computer via the switches, but any files transfered from the computer are streamed, so you don't need that kind of speed.
