I was more asking a question than making an observation.

From criterionforum.org in regard to the recent OOP status of Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy on Criterion's site...

Good news! I emailed Criterion and received this reply:

Quote:
Thank you for your email and question.
There will be a new release in the future of Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy, but we unsure when it will be available.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns, and thank you for supporting Criterion!
Best,
Jon Mulvaney

Then I will take partial credit for bringing up Godzilla in the first place.

Honestly, and I know this will not be popular, I am disappointed when I hear Criterion putting out or rumored to put out titles that have already been released on blu-ray in the US; Fear and Loathing, Dazed and Confused, Gojira, The Rock, etc... It's different when it is released in another country, as Criterion region locks their releases, but when it is already out in the US seems like a waste of a release. 1080P is pretty much 1080P and frankly the Universal releases of the 2 movies above are more than competent. Besides the extras, which are usually a port from the dvd most should already own, why would someone want to double-dip on a title already released?? Because it has the wacky C?? I guess that is what Criterion is counting on...

Wasn't the Godzilla blu-ray 1080i? It had horrible picture quality.

gojira has really crappy quality. when criterion went blu-ray i immediately hoped for a CC fear and loathing, but universal released theirs first, held out for the cc title because of their reputation. i haven't considered the universal's dazed and confused. waiting for the CC edition to be released. i will double dip only if the future title has better PQ & AQ. i can always sell my inferior copy.

If all of this means anything, January is shaping up to be an amazing month with already three essential titles: This is Spinal Tap, Gojira and Belle de Jour . Can Criterion give us anything more awesome than this?

If they do say Gojira for January, I will be happy! I will think of it as a late Christmas gift

I know it's been release already but it's a very bad release and we all know this Criterion will be way and above better.

I don't expect to see Gojira - which is definitely worth restoring - for a while (particularly if they're also going to do anything with the Godzilla King of the Monsters print they dug up recently).

As for This is Spinal Tap, put me down for 'what's the point'.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie and I really like it but as Criterions go it's a reach to begin with and it's already got a decent enough US release.

I'm thinking somebody just found the pick in a drawer and thought it was cool.

Okay, I'll be nerdy about fonts here, but "Criterion" in that pic (pun intended) looks the old serifed font from their early editions. I agree it's a vintage photo and wouldn't think it's an indicator of a new release.

I was about to say the same thing. Probably a promotional item from the original release that they thought was cool, took a picture of, and uploaded to show everyone.

Not to be a stick in the mud; but Criterion Spinal Tap? Isn't the MGM edition fully packed already? Godzilla?...Really? The Rock?....WTF? With SO MANY films that are more worthy of upgrades and films they have been promising like Y Tu Mama Tambien it is disappointing if this is all true and they get released ahead of much more worthy films. Le Samouraļ please.

That one works. Quite well, actually.

It's impact is undeniable and it's not like anybody else was stepping up to do a quality restoration. If they had a shot at Dracula or Frankenstein I'd expect them to jump at those too.

This is Spinal Tap DVD is considered a collectable, yeah the MGM release is good, but it gets good sales. Godzilla IMO is gonna make the current BLU release look like a compresse YouTube video I think. If you do a remade well it can sell, you're gonna see a lot of fans dump that old blu ASAP.

U know many hate it when Criterion releases mainstream releases, but they always release many such titles on laserdisc (yep the climate was different) still I wish Criterion would rescuer EVITA from bargain bin DVD hell. The bonus features on the blu were many. An uncompressed dts HD audio track would be icing on the cake, or the cake itself?
