A good reason NOT to boycott Universal/Paramount?

Let's say Paramount has a HUGE hit this spring... something that earns $200 million + at the box office. And let's say Blu-ray continues to outsell HD DVD by a 6 or 7-to-1 margin. Paramount sees the box office performance of their hit. They project how much money they'll make when it's released on disc. The potential profits on a huge hit released on Blu-ray might be too great to be ignored. Thus it might speed up their plans for neutrality.

But if none of their films do that well, there isn't that potential windfall, and thus less incentive to switch to Blu. So they might hold out even longer.

I'll grant that this is largely academic. Paramount and Universal ultimately will go Blu before Christmas. But prompting them to switch sooner rather than later would be to everyone's benefit.

I disagree with you 100%. They might be more quickly to release titles on blu if the movie does less than expected to try to recoup some earning that where never made at the box office plus it will show them what we think of they're stupid policy.

I will boycott them until they are blu, end of discussion.

Before this HD war, how many of us really cared which studio released movies? We, the foot soldiers of the war, cared only because we did not want to attend a movie released by a studio exclusive to the other side. How many of the new Blu adopters want to know which studio released what movie? ...and there are a whole lot more of those folks that just want to go watch a good flick!

So, will we be able to make a dent if we don't watch the movie?

I'm with you on that.

I stopped buying DVDs last year, Crash being my last one. Now It's only BD or cable for me. So if it doesn't come out on BD it isn't paid for by me.

Same here, I'm not interested in giving them any added revenues until they are willing to produce their movies on the format that I use. Until then, the company can kiss my money good-bye

Your boycott will amount to nothing as you have big movies from both studios coming out this summer
The New Indiana Jones Movie will gross at least 200 mil minimum
Iron Man another 200 mill minimum
so you can boycott if you want but it wont even be a blip on the radar stop buying and renting there movies and then you will get there attention

The answer you all are seeking is... to keep supporting Blu-ray aggressively with purchases from the supporting studios. Yes, we are all dumbfounded by the decisions from Universal and Paramount to remain red. But the only way to get these studios to go Blu is to keep pushing the Blu vs. HD-DVD margins even further and further apart with our wallets. It is only a matter of time before the top executives at these studios will pull the Home Entertainment leadership in their offices and ask them WTF they are doing. Additionally, stock holders will begin to lose confidence in the studios top leadership and that will trickle down to the Home Entertainment leadership. As Blu momentum continues to grow, the studio leadership WILL FEEL THE PRESSURE!

For those who boycott any Paramount or Universal product, that is your choice and so be it. But remember, in today's entertainment world a top selling title on DVD can easily overshadow any Box Office receipts. If any logical studio executive wants to see "the green" they know "the future is blu".

The problem is if everyone thought like this then yes it would have little or no impact. If people are serious about boycotting these studios it needs to be organised and there needs to be a clear message why people should join.

Paramount was the #1 dollar grossing studio of 2007, your efforts are commendable but they arent working.people just arent buying the titles on HDDVD only dvd and thats helping prove to them that blu is the way to go

...was used to see I am Legend this weekend. It opened at $77 million. Whether or not a studio recognizes my small contribution is not the point. I'm not going to support movies in the theaters from Universal or Paramount/Dreamworks, only to have them slap me in the face when it comes time to view them at home. Releasing on Blu-ray at this point is not an unreasonable request.

If it makes you feel better, okay. But just realize that you are not making even remotely enough of an impact to change the time frame on which they will release their movies on Blu-Ray. If 'I am Legend' was a movie that you were more interested in seeing than 'Cloverfield', then your decision makes sense. If you would have otherwise rather seen 'Cloverfield', but chose 'I am Legend' instead based on some boycott, then you really need to rethink your priorities.

It's not really so much a 'slap in the face' as much as it is a business decision. It's fine to disagree with it, but we all know that the writing is on the wall, and sooner or later they will be putting movies out on Blu-Ray anyway. It's not like they are personally trying to attack you, yet you (and others like you) seem to take it so personally.

Would it be nice if their movies were on Blu-Ray right now? Sure. But, they will be on Blu-Ray sooner or later anyway. At this point, Paramount is still locked in with a contract (as far as we know). They likely would have jumped ship by now if they could (or they may be planning to as we speak if they do indeed have an out clause).

If you really want to make an impact at all, you should at least write a letter to these studios letting them know what you are doing with your money that you would be spending on seeing their movies if they were releasing them on Blu-Ray. While it probably still wouldn't make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things, at least they would get the message. Otherwise, your just cheating yourself out of seeing movies that you might actually enjoy if you'd get past your 'issues' with the studios in question. It doesn't make much sense to me.

On a related note, I'm going to be boycotting all movies on Blu-Ray that don't come out at IMAX at the theatre stage.
