Question Where oh where is the real Moby Dick

So now that we have the 2011 version of Moby Dick released on Blu-ray
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Moby-Dick-Blu-ray/27567/
when the heck are they going to release the previous versions, and I am not referring to that psycho picture with Barry Bostwick and a submarine that I skimmed through on you tube.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1694508/

I want the 1956 version with Gregory Peck going off the deep end. One of my three favorite movies of all time and one of my favorite performances as well. Although my ideal would be to have a Star Trek TOS move and provide the original model whale version and another version you could select with an enhanced CGI whale. I'm sure a CGI whale would irritate a lot of people but it might make the movie a little more enjoyable for younger viewers. My son was riveted a couple of years ago when watching, but afterward he said he wished the whale looked more realistic. I loaned out my DVD a couple of weeks ago to a younger colleague then had an enjoyable argument about the movie.

I also want the 1930 version with John Barrymore. I used to have this on VHS but loaned it out and forgot who had it. Probably one of the best unintentionally funny movies I have ever seen. I haven't ever seen the Sea Beast which was the silent version from 1925, although I have oddly seen the DVD available for sale. I doubt I would ever pick up the 1978 version which I watched twice on VHS and have kept on the shelf since then.

I was also wondering if anyone watched the 2011 version yet and how they thought it compared to any of the earlier versions.

I know what you're talking about. We need this on blu. For a 1956 movie the effects were outstanding. The whale was remarkable.

I found this thread and wanted to update some information - it has been released in Australia under the " Hollywood Gold Series" which have had a good record bringing out titles that tend to look pretty decent. I was going to order this, although there are currently no reviews or other information on this particular release - which came out on July 2. Not sure if it is Region locked but I can play them regardless. Anyone interested might want to check it out.

Good stuff. Looks like a person has ordered it and will post a review coming up sometime soon.

Picked this up today:

The disc is region free - confirmed on my Oppo

Aspect ratio is 1.66, LPCM 2-channel mono track, No extras, static menu screen with chapter selection.

The print used has some minor damage but nothing too distracting. Based on my spot checking tonight, the PQ is on the soft side and the colors somewhat muted (though that may be how the film is supposed to look, I haven't seen it for many decades).

Overall, not the greatest transfer of a vintage title but adequate for the semi-budget price.

Anyone know how to order this in the States? I haven't bought any BDs from Australia before and didn't see anything with a quick google search

fishpond.com is a good source for BDs from down under. Free worldwide shipping, reasonable prices, and they've been a reliable retailer for me for several years -- never had a lost or damaged item from them.

I have several of these Hollywood Gold Series BD's (Lifeboat, The Devils Brigade, Journey to the Center of Earth, Judgment at Nuremberg, etc) and they are all of pretty good quality and are ALL region-free.

I've ordered a lot through JBHiFi, an Australian company that ships to US.

I also really like the 1998 Moby Dick starring Patrick Stewart. Good adaptation.

A couple of people on HomeTheatreForum bought it and discussed video and audio quality and AR

I'm thinking I should pick this up sooner than later.

Just ordered from fishpond. I got back from travel and figured why wait for a sale for one of my 3 all-time favorite movies.

Just watched this last night, just amazing. It came in about a week earlier than fish ponds early estimate.

Ron Howard's "In the Heart of the Sea." will open this December. It's based on the true story that inspired Melville to write "Moby Dick." I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see the 1956 classic film released at that time. It would be a major lost opportunity to sell a sh*tload of discs on the heels of the marketing campaign for what looks to be, based on the previews, a tremendous film from Ron Howard.

Seconding. If anyone should get this it's Criterion or Arrow UK or the actual company. Twilight Time doesn't deserve any money from me and they belong in my Other collection.
I also really love this movie and hoping WB through WAC maybe would also release Captain Horatio Hornblower.

Yes, Criterion is the only independent I trust to do this film justice for a larger group of enthusiasts. I respect their business model and hope they continue to weather these economic times. I personally believe the overall economy has done more damage to packaged media than digital. I's simply a hobby that many have decided they can no longer afford.
