My guess...
PS4 will be PIMPED TO THE MAX AND COST $650 @ LAUNCH! They are going to plan this bastard to be far and above the best piece of tech possibly available. There is no way I'd put a console out that would be close in performance to my competitors at this stage of the console wars. People now know that Sony will keep making it better, so they'll know that however much they pimp it out and price it, it will be worth it. |

I would say the PS3s rocky start was more due to the fact that it was released a whole year after the Xbox 360. Most people had already bought 360s and games over the year and didn't want to spend money on a new console even if it was reasonably priced. If this new Playstation is released a significant amount of time before the new Xbox, people will buy it no matter the price. If the new Xbox is again released a significant amount of time before the Playstation, people will buy the Xbox.

It's all about hardware. Can anyone really imagine an Xbox 720 without a hard-drive of some sort? The PS4 will be the same with a single unified hardware spec and variable HDD. The blu ray drive is no longer expensive, and even though the 720 will sport more memory (PS4 again going with XDR or XDR2) both machines will have huge graphics cards.
Sony need to do something with the PS4 that will be an immediate incentive to consumers if it is to go head to head with the 720. Being a more than capable BD player is no longer sufficient. Would any of the more technicaly minded posters here care to take a gander on what the actual build of the PS4 would be? Something suggests that the cell processor is going to take a back seat to a more bog-standard (multi-core cpu) build and heavy duty graphics card. |

What i'm saying is that most people can't afford to buy multiple consoles and games for both of them early on. Myself and all of my closest friends(except 1) bought an Xbox 360 around launch and had no interest in the PS3 when that was released a year later. It was not because of the price, it was because we had already invested too much time and money into our 360s and all of our friends were already playing Xbox. Why buy a new console and start over? A $100, or even $200 price drop would not have changed my mind. Game library for PS3 launch was definitely poor, but honestly the 360's launch titles didn't wow me either. I didn't buy a PS3 until late 2009 and wasn't excited about any exclusives until God of War 3.

The PS4 will be backward compatible to play PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, Dreamcast and Saturn games, and give you the option to play everything in 4D. The biggest launch title will be Uncharted 4 which will have a 700 hour campaign.

I'm hoping for jRPG support earlier in the generation from the likes of Namco and Level 5. It should happen because they won't be toying around with releasing them exclusively on the 360 after the catastrophic failure of sales on that platform. Unless, they are stupid of course.
If the initial lineup is only shooters, I will gladly wait. |
