1x for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is 36 Mbps so a 6x drive is 216 Mbps which is an improvement over DVD and CD read/write speeds (DVD 1x is 11 Mbps, CD 1x is 150 Kbps - a 16x DVD drive is therefore 172 Mbps).
