I'm a bit lost here. What is Warner doing now that is different from their January 4 announcement ?

What we knew was that they will release hddud three weeks after the Blu release. Also that they will stop supporting hddud on May 31

So what exactly is changed now ?

Initially, some sites thought (were reporting) that Warner was only delaying the new releases for HD DVD by 3 weeks but that back catalog titles would be released at the same time. Then, apparently, Warner let people know that back catalog titles would also be released 3 weeks later on HD DVD and some how, this is being spun as a positive for HD DVD.
