It doesn't have to be Criterion (though I wouldn't object if it were) but yeah, I would love to see a quality release of Thief.

It's not an exceptional or important film by any stretch but I think it would fit in much the same way something like Blow Out does...they're both solid films that are very representative/evocative of their era with noteworthy directors.

edit: The Hunger would fit that description too (well, not so much the noteworthy director part but still)...I need to start whining for that...it would be a great addition

Two of the films I ordered from B&N are delayed - The Killing and Pierrot Le Fou. Anybody have any experience and any idea as to why that might be / how long I'll have to wait before they get shipped?

Three possible reasons:

1. Pierrot le fou is OOP, and hard to get
2. Both titles are highly popular purchases this sale, and you're later in the queue to receive them
3. You're a Canadian, and you get pushed down the queue for an American buyer, or so I figure.

The Tin Drum needs a Criterion Blu. Just watched the DVD & the film was rather good.

I was really hoping they'd give Canadians similar treatment to the Americans. I also really hope I still get Pierrot Le Fou

EDIT: Both orders just got canceled! I guess I'll try again and see if that improves matters. Not terribly impressed right now.

Didn't the director say that a Criterion BD was in the works? Or maybe I just figured that since they released it on DVD too.

I hope that if we get it, both the original cut and director's cut are included.

Nope, we don`t get similar treatment, and although I`ve never had it happen yet, what happened to you is what happens to a lot of us Canadians. Look at how long it takes for us to receive a shipment, on average, a month. Mind you, I think a lot of that has to do with Canada Post, but B&N thinks we should get our stuff within 2 weeks at the most, and seem rather surprised that it takes a month or more. We`re not even entitled to getting a free Nook replacement charger when it breaks within the year`s warranty, as they claim no Nook items can cross the boarder, yet we can pay 25 bucks to order one from their site that will ship to Canada. The Nook itself, however, won`t, but the accessories will. That makes no freaking sense to me.

I`d keep trying. Too bad Amazon`s jacked the price back up, a couple weeks ago they had Pierrot le fou on for 19.99, and it sold out like crazy.

Not being snarky, as I always like your comments, but who do you think it might be? We're only speculating Kurosawa because the Criterion Cast does.

Could it possibly be Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy?

Well, there is also someone saying Kwaidan which is not all that crazy considering Kobayashi's Harakiri just got released .

I'm not sure. I was just saying it can be anything. Kurosawa is 1 guess.

For some reason though, I'm not holding my breathe especially that soon..... but it would be a perfect fit for the collection and they do seem to favor Trier films so you never know
I dunno.....given the limited number of blu-rays Criterion releases a month, I would not mind if they would take a break from the severly depressing or disturbing category. Salo was enough for awhile. And now I keep reading posts predicting the release of Tiny Furniture. That depresses and disturbs me a lot.

What can anyone tell me about this Eclipse set?

Eclipse Series 15:
Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu

The write up looks interesting...any feedback by anyone that owns it/has seen any/all of the films in the set?

I'm definitely planning on grabbing Three Colors next week and I was also leaning toward picking up Double Life of Veronique (time and funds permitting) before the end of the B&N sale but now I'm kind of having second thoughts. Four Kieslowski films seems a little like overkill. Is DLV sufficiently different from the Colors films to warrant getting them all now?

(FYI, potential replacements for DLV on the 'if I can squeeze it in list' include Life During Wartime, My Life as a Dog and Vivre Sa Vie).

I blind-bought the Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu set during the last sale.
I've now watched three out of the four and so far I've really liked them.
Superficially, they're social melodramas, with often a whimsical tone.
However, there's also a strong social comment, made more clear after you read the short essays provided on the inside of the DVD covers. I think CriterionCast have also covered some of these films.
Because they're short and don't have earth-shaking surround-sound mixes, I often save them for late-night viewing after Mrs DrBikeShorts goes to bed.
If you like early Japanese cinema, then this set is definitely recommended.

I actually re-watched part of Veronique last night.
Yes, I think they're sufficiently different, although clearly from the same film-maker.
I personally prefer the trilogy, particularly Red, however they are plenty on this forum that will prefer Veronique.
I don't think four Kieslowski's is overkill and I doubt you'd regret getting all them.

EDIT: Oh, btw, Vivre Sa Vie is one of my favourite Criterions and definitely my favourite Godard. I would pick it over Veronique, but not because of anything against Veronique.

Thanks doc! I have a copy ordered to be delivered to my local B & N. Would be nice if I got it Tuesday with Colors and Rules.

The Mizoguchi is on hold for now...I'll eventually pick it up...currently obsessed with the earlier films and silents. Picked up the Silent Ozu, as it will pair nicely with my Silent Naruse.

Thanks again for your feedback!
