I emailed Blue Underground to thank them for the best news I've heard all year: City of the Living Dead and Prowler. After I was through smoochin' their buns, I asked them what happened to Maniac, and they responded:

We are currently working on a brand new HD transfer of MANIAC, which will be released as a 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray later this year. Details will be announced on our website in the coming months.

Wow. Blue Underground is great at being forthcoming with information it seems! I guess the guy who runs it was the heart and soul of Anchor Bay back in the good ole days, because it seems Blue Underground runs on their old business model.

It'll be great to see Maniac remastered and in hi-def.

Considering the "guy" who runs BU is William Lustig, the director of Maniac, its not a shock that he'd be forthcoming about his baby coming to BD.

Fair enough, although it's not like we're talking about the Star Wars movies, where Fox execs would face Lucas's wrath it they so much as hinted at a possible blu release w/o his say so. Considering the titles BU distributes, the more info out there (even if it"S nothing more than bait for boards like this), the more buzz/interest the can generate, which can inform their release decisions.

That said, being this is Bill's baby, I'd say I'm more suprised this wasn't a launch title for BU on blu. Here's hoping the doc they did on Lou Spinnel (I'm sorry if I misspelled his name) for the AB DVD makes its way on this disc (for no other reason than for the story of how he was the highest paid actor on The Godfather.....priceless).

He's also in both Godfather I & II, and he plays a police captain in Nighthawks.

You're right, it's just like Anchor Bay in the early DVD days. Hopefully they keep cranking out their catalog.
