Even when the book came out, it was revealed that it was a big fat hoax and the then-owners pretty much improvised the story with the author over a couple bottles of cheap wine.
That pretty much explains why there's no consistent logic to any of the hauntings, and the demonic forces seem to be making things up as they go along.

The killings by Ronald DeFeo though were no hoax. The Lutzes likely embellished much of what happened to them.
