No supplements on Three Outlaw Samurai yet it still has a $40 price tag?

Super excited for Anatomy of a Murder and World on a Wire!

Everybody seems stoked for Anatomy of a Murder. I've never heard of it.

Three Outlaw Samurai looks cool - still kinda wishing we got Rashomon though.

I'm on a smartphone on a bus, but I will be on a legit computer soon. Too hard to type with all the bumps and stops.

Don't worry. I'm sure if Criterion has their way, we won't see any more Kurosawa blu-rays.

Let me rephrase it. We won't see any more of his samurai classics on blu-ray. They've had a wonderful print and transfer of Rashomon for at least a year(I think it's closer to 2 years) and have done nothing but let it sit. At the same time, the rumblings I've heard say they have 2 of his movies for blu-ray release in 2012 and those are Stray Dog and Drunken Angel. Both are wonderful movies and I would be proud to own them, but they aren't Throne Of Blood, Rashomon, Red Beard, Hidden Fortress or even his best non-samurai film, The Bad Sleep Well.

I also guess they're never gonna release Madadayo on its own. I'm not buying that laughably overpriced box set to get one movie.

And let's not forget for a moment their debacle with Ran. Lost the rights less than a month before release and didn't make one single damned effort to retain them.

Criterion has a $24 price on their site. Bare bones and one of the cheapest BD they have ever put out.

Excited only for Anatomy (as I have not seen it in a while) and definitely World. I love Malle, but not convinced on Vanya yet.

Pretty bold statement there. But to say that we won't see any more of his samurai films on blu-ray is ridiculous considering they're money makers for Criterion. Maybe not anytime soon but they'll release them eventually at a time they think is appropriate.

At this point I'd rather see the films of other Japanese directors make the transition to Blu-ray. And Stray Dog and Drunken Angel are, in my opinion, the best choices for 2012.

On the other hand, not all Kurosawa samurai films are "classics", though this seems to be a popular notion on this forum. So, Criterion "should have their way" because there are plenty of other important directors whose films deserve to be in the collection. Frankly, I find it quite bizarre that there are so many Japanese films in the collection but not a single Spanish film.
