Good point, though I wouldn't have minded even if it's just a

Aaaaaand........back to movies....

Hey, rkish. I could not resist. Today I picked up the Silent Ozu Eclipse series since it was a new arrival at the Barnes and Noble nearest me, and the only copy available out of 13 stores in my city. I figure I will hold off on the later Ozu Eclipse, anticipating BFI blu-ray releases.

This has me wondering what else in the Eclipse series may get an overseas blu-ray release in the next year or so. For instance, I would think the Raymond Bernard set has a reasonable chance of seeing a Region B release for Les Miserables.

Any others?

My digipacks have always come in good condition, from both Amazon and Barnes & Noble; the only damaged case I've ever had was the plastic case for The Thin Red Line.
For what it's worth, I don't mind the digipacks - I think they look really nice. Marienbad is the only problematic one - it's packed super-tight and is hard to open.
It's probably worth noting: my orders are coming to Australia and are usually in a box with multiple films, so they're usually packed securely. My experience might be irrelevant to your question.

Just saw the price jump for Anatomy of a Murder and World on a Wire.

Glad I pulled the trigger on both when they were still $16.99.

No problem. There are about 40 votes in already and I'll keep it open as long as people are voting.

The hardest part was I had to type in all 70 releases to create a master validation list, but for other polls I can just modify the original and duplicate as needed. The beauty of Google forms is when you guys vote it puts the results in a spreadsheet for me

BTW, another Criterion BD release is coming on TCM next week:

The Sweet Smell of Success is coming on at 8PM EST on Tuesday, the 22nd. The day before, Both Kiss Me Deadly and Paths of Glory are coming on in the afternoon.

There's also a bunch of DVD only Criterion titles coming on within the next two weeks. Some of the ones that I've noticed, and all times are EST:

Saturday, November 19th:
2:00 AM - Equinox
6:00 AM - Elephant Boy (In the new Sabu! Eclipse set)

Monday, November 21st:
2:15 AM - Stolen Kisses

Thursday, November 24th:
10:00 PM - The Lady Eve

Saturday, November 26th:

10:00 PM - The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

Sunday, November 27th:
2:00 AM - Ivan the Terrible (Part 1)
3:45 AM - Ivan the Terrible (Part 2)

My PVR is going to be even more busy now.

Good deal Dude! It looks nice next to my Silent Naruse set...THAT is the only reason that I bought it...that, and the really cheap price that I got it for. For the record...it was the only copy in the two stores local to me.

BTW...B & N wound up shipping a copy of the Larisa Shepitko Eclipse with cracked cases...it was shipped in a plastic envelope with NO bubble wrap, etc. I emailed Mr. Mulvaney yesterday morning and he wrote me back later in the day. He's a REAL class act...I hope to meet him one day!

Hard to say which of the Criterion Eclipse/solo DVDs will be released in the near future in Region B land...will have to think about that.

Even though I can't afford it, I should be picking up my copy of the Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu Eclipse set from the store today...this is new frontier for me, but I'm expecting an "Ozu-esque" experience from what I've read and heard from you fine folks here!

Hey BG...I was watching the trailer for Anatomy and noticed that George C. Scott not only wasn't "interrogated" by Preminger, but wasn't mentioned in the list of actors in the film. Was this his first big film? I realize it's quite early in his career.

Eventually I would assume they would *ALL* be in hard case so long as they remain in print. I guess it just takes awhile for the inventory to refresh, i mean it's been YEARS now since these digi-packs were phased out, correct?
I replaced most of my cases when Criterion had a half price sale on top of free shipping over $50.00. That is when I replaced cases for about 5 titles. But I do understand your thinking.

The only other film Scott was in prior to Anatomy of a Murder, was The Hanging Tree with Gary Cooper and Karl Malden (his later, underappreciated, Patton co-star). Most of his credits were TV shows or "play of the week" type deals. Anatomy of a Murder was a bit of a breakout role for him, as it was his first nomination for Best Supporting Actor. It really wasn't until The Hustler and Dr. Strangelove that he began to get more "meaty" roles like his Claude Dancer role in Anatomy of a Murder, as in important roles, not chronological order for films.

Fun fact: He was married twice to Colleen Dewhurst, aka Marilla Cuthbert from the Anne of Green Gables mini-series, Murphy Brown's mother, and Kate from The Cowboys. They were married from 1960-65, and had two kids, and then they married again from 1967-1972.

you know it's $27.99 on Amazon...? is over a half a year worth waiting to save roughly $10?...

I do feel like you tho it is a huge bummer that it wont be on sale, I'll probably pick it up/order over the holidays

Yes, June and January see these sales yearly.

This past year, B&N had a 40% off ALL Blu rays sale, including Criterions. That is not too bad if you want to spread out your purchases and not have to buy everything you want during the months of July and November.

I agree, but discussing this point seems to be moot. As I turned out to be the bad guy in this discussion.

Anyways, for anyone on the fence, I got through almost half of the Fanny and Alexander tv series yesterday. IMO, as compared to the CC dvd, it is a very nice upgrade. Color is very prevalent in this release and the BD really shines, along with the overall clarity as compared to the dvd. Usually, I will buy the BD, if I already own the dvd, and see if it is worth the upgrade. If it does not 'wow' me, I usually sell the BD, but in this case, the opposite will happen. A very nice release for anyone that owns the dvd and is curious.

It will be part of a series or a box set, apparently. I couldn’t hear as well as I wanted to but I think he said the package will include four of his films."

Assuming it will be a set with Alice In The Cities/The Wrong Move/Kings of the Road/The American Friend (or maybe a Road Movie Trilogy box set and the American Friend released separately?). I'm pleasantly surprised these aren't being dumped into an Eclipse set. Still patiently waiting for Until The End of the World, too. I hope I don't have to wait until November for this one.

RIP Peter Przygodda
Interesting news Joe.

The original Anchor Bay set that included An American Friend has been OOP for awhile, so also currently MIA (and presumably up for grabs by Criterion) are Notebook on Cities & Clothes and Lightning Over Water. The latter in particular - Wenders fascinating document of the final days of director/mentor Nicholas Ray - was a one-of-a-kind project, which I would love to see included in a Wenders Criterion set.
