So I see that the price for Anatomy Of A Murder and World On A Wire is up from $16.99 to $27.99. Hope that Amazon does not cancel our orders at the $16.99 price for each.

Blu-rays are surprisingly tough things, don't suffer after rattling around a case like DVD does. Open her up up and I am sure you will find all is okay

I also say open it. Blurays have a harder protective layer on the surface to protect the data layer. They are more scratch resistant than DVDs. I've had a couple of blurays loose in the case before, and the discs were unscathed on inspection.

If it is scratched, you could take it to a video store that has a polishing machine. Any light scuffs should come out easily.

Was the DVD version of 'Fanny and Alexander' one spine number like the Blu is? I thought it was 2 spine numbers. If so, why is the Blu only 1?

The DVD is four spine numbers... 261 for the box... 262, 263, and 264 for the films.

Because that's what Criterion wanted to do for the blu-ray. I don't think they need a reason other than they chose to do so, right?

And I don't mean for my answer to seem like smart-a$$ jive-talking... I just don't think, in the grand scheme of things, it matters as to why one release has numbers that another release doesn't.

That makes sense. It's just that...if you're collecting a lot of them, there's a feeling of incompleteness when you're missing the three numbers. But, I suppose, knowing there's supposed to be three numbers there makes it better.

Or maybe it's just me and I sound crazy for saying that...

just watched "Shock Corridor", great Samuel Fuller film!

One thing that puzzles me is why did'nt Criterion get a James Best interview? (he's still alive and did a great performance in the film IMO)

[Show spoiler]I was joking in case no one got that, AFFOD totally ripped off everything, although it was well done and enjoyable as well
I was on my iPhone when I first read this and didn't see the spoiler - now that I'm home and I had some free time, I came back to lecture you about your Western history. Turns out I had no need! Cheers!

100%. Criterion has 3-4 more films (I know 3).

I know this is not BD related but seeing how we openly discuss DVD Criterion and the like I will let myself continue . I just saw Taste of Cherry for the very first time and was completely blown-away . What an amazing film; it really is fascinating the ease Kiarostami has for doing great things from almost nothing. I really enjoyed the different and contrasting points of view and the gentle camerawork. Every character in the film seemed to have a purpose other than just stand there. The Iranian backdrop was also interestingly used. I can't really say much more as I don't want to spoil it to anyone who has not seen it yet. Now I am even more excited for a future BD release. Please Criterion, make it happen this year .

I know exactly what you are referring to because my Raymond Bernard Eclipse set arrived today in one of these same plastic envelopes with absolutely no padding of any kind. Thankfully it was in good shape. When did B&N.com start using these? Talk about bottom of the barrel cheap-ass packaging. They might as well just put a label on the disc case and mail it out.

I am glad Mulvaney wrote you back so quickly. From what people write here, he is always positive and very helpful. I picture him being one overworked and stressed out guy who loves his job. I take it he is sending you new cases? The Larisa Shepitko films are too good to be shipped in a plastic envelope.

Received an email from AMZ saying that they'd be able to get my pre-order(s) of Anatomy Of A Murder and Three Outlaw Samurai faster than initially expected.

Even though I can't afford it, I should be picking up my copy of the Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu Eclipse set from the store today...this is new frontier for me, but I'm expecting an "Ozu-esque" experience from what I've read and heard from you fine folks here!
I am also tempted by the Shimizu set after watching parts of each film on hulu plus. Let me know what you think about it if you are able to watch it before the sale ends. I need to be careful, though, since I have already blown through my Criterion budget and will now be eating peanut butter and ramen for a few weeks.

Still, a few Eclipse sets keep tempting me with the current sale price and coupons. Shimizu is the big one. I also keep picking up the Leningrad Cowboys set then putting it back. It turns out this is one set without any movies available on hulu plus, so all I have to go by are youtube clips and the clip with Jim Jarmusch on Criterion's website. These movies look like fun, full of deadpan goofy humor. I am also on the fence about the Early Bergman set.

If anybody here is a Bergman fan - I just read a pretty hilarious article featuring 10 different responses from 10 different popular authors on the topic of "10 writing tips". So there were 100 tips from 10 different authors, many of which clashed. They argued a lot over whether it was good to read or not if you were writing/a writer, some suggesting that reading actually dampened your own creativity. (Whatever works for you is what I think, but I'm not a popular author so who cares?)

My favourite piece of advice, though: "If you have to read, to cheer yourself up read biographies of writers who went insane. And on Saturdays, you can watch an old Bergman film, preferably Persona or Autumn Sonata."
