also, are you saying that when you use the SONY calibration, your blurays look off?
I have HD cable through Time Warner.
I think the problem is really my TV and its lousy settings.
By the way, I am using the ability to barely make out the right pluge chip as a basis on what looks right when using the calibration.

I have been waiting around for months for the Blu-ray version of the DVE calibrater that comes out in March and hope that will make things a little easier.

I guess I'll just have to wait until I get DVE calibrater to get this whole thing sorted out.

Also, have you tried a DVE disc before? What's it like?
I'm hoping its worth $20.00 instead of getting anything I can find on the internet for free.

Good, there were no instructions with the Sony calibrater, and I still didn't understand some of the things on it, even after reading that post mentioned earlier in the thread.

Great thread crackinhedz! You !

I agree, the DVD Essentials route is the way to go. They're easy to use and you'll see great results after.

Can't wait for the HD version!

Default Summary?

I've read this whole thread, and learned a lot. That being said, I'm still looking for a summary, for what's available today, for calibration.

I'm not going to drop $300 for the ISF at this point, and I do have mixed sources (Bluray / HDMI, HD and SD cable / HDMI, Wii / Component). I've got a Samsung PN50A550, and I went to Tweak TV, those settings didn't seem to do much. Can someone tell me what the best way is to get good looking pictures form each or all signal(s), without torching my plasma?

Also, I've tried to run the Sony calibrator, but it just gives me the circle with the line through it. I'm sure it's on the disk (50 first dates) because the insert directs me to use it. I have a cheap Insignia NS-BRDVD BluRay player, would that have anything do do with it?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Default Free calibration disc for BD

Here is a link for a DVE type disc on AVS. Read the thread a little and download the AVCHD disc. It is BD compatable. If you read the instructions a little, it will definetly help your situation. It is also free!!!

I know everyone says to use cinema/movie mode as it provides the most "accurate" settings, but I use standard. I just don't like how the movie mode dulls everything and makes it look reddish, even if that is more accurate, IMO. Just don't use vivid/dynamic because the settings are so "juiced", they can drain the life of your set. Plus, I think dynamic makes everything look bluish.

I use the movie settings for BD. Standard when i'm watching TV, game when playing PS3, and Dynamic (Fixed) when watching sports. I also use the user setting (set by paidgeeks instructions on how to setup colors on Sony discs) when watching tv programs.

i wouldn't use standard and dynamic doesn't kill the life or look bluish

and if you use vivid just adjust the saturation

i watch television with
:-44 briightness
:59 contrast
:50 hue
:53 saturation

Okay....now that was cool. I burned it and played it through my PS3 and this was the first calibration that gave me good looking black levels on the first try. They have instructions for most of the stuff, and I have no clue how to use everything on there that is without an explanation. I also wish I was able to use the blue filter stuff. Thank you very much for showing me this, it will hold me over until the DVE blu-ray comes out.

However, I discovered even more problems with my settings by using this. When on the White Clipping Pattern I tried every single thing possible to see the flashing bars and never saw any. In the Misc Patterns section patterns 5 and 6 were flashing like crazy and it says "Note: Incorrect deinterlacing may cause this pattern to flash". As stated before I have a 1080i HDTV, so what exactly does this mean?

The first HD DVD disk I bought was the DVE High Definition Video Essentials disk. It made an absolutely HUGE difference in my PQ.

As I run both my Blu-ray player and HD DVD player through my Onkyo 705 receiver, and the 705 outputs to just HDMI 1 on my TV.( Meaning 1 input on my TV for both players.)

Do you think I'd benefit from a Blu-ray version of the DVE disk? Blu-ray movies always look brighter and clearer on my TV. Would the difference in video bitrate between the two formats make a difference?

On my HD DVD copy of DVE, it states this is a test pattern for 1080p televisions. 1080p televisions de-interlace 1080i signals and make them into 1080p. Some TVs do a better job of de-interlacing than others. If you see the patterns flashing then you know you only have a 1080i picture.

As you only have 1080i anyhow, you are seeing the image correctly.

I have HD cable service through Time Warner as well. They've paired up w/ Scientific Atlantica who, imho, produces the poorest quality HD/DVR box in the world. I've had many problems w/ HD and Time Warner consistantly insists it is not them. I've found you have to use the composite cables for best results. You cannot accurately assess video/audio quality from what they give you. I'm about ready to switch to Dish Networks.

Anywho - I'm new to the forum and it's very cool to see a process for calibrating LCD HDTVs. I'm going to try this when I get home this evening!
