It helps blu ray adoption by making people say "well I can play my dvds on it so I will make the move" instead of "I have too many movies on dvd to lose"

I'm going for the Trojan horse theory. If Blu-ray players make it below $100, manufactures and retailers may phase out DVD players in favor of Blu-Ray players because it can play both. So if someone wants to replace there broken dvd player they may have to buy a Blu-Ray player even if for no other reason to play DVD's.

I think the benefits of it playing DVDs far outweigh the possible negatives.

I couldn't even imagine trying to get the public to buy another machine whose only use is to exclusively play Blu discs, while ignoring their library of DVDs.

I'm glad of the backward capability, it allows me to slowly phase my collection over to Blu, and only have one machine for those that haven't made the change over yet. It would drive me nuts to watch Stargate on the PS3, and then have to unhook it, and hook up the DVD player to watch Stargate SG-1 on DVD. It's SO much easier to just eject the blu, and insert the dvd. I would have been more hesitant to buy one without backwards capability.

The way I look at it, instead of only having a few blu's I can play, I've got hundreds of discs I can play.

I think it is a good thing to have BC in the players. Plus it is a good way to compair the differance of DVD to Blu. I like my upscaled DVD's but it is still a slight pain to my eyes now that I am used to the amazing HD quality of Blu.

Ditto. The most influential thing that incourages upgrading is the backwards compatibility. PC's would never have flourished if every new design was not backwards compatible. The further we progress the more some of those old technologies get knocked out of the backwards compatible loop. Both hardware and old software will no longer run.

If blu-ray was some kind of memory card, and not a disc, it would meet a lot more resistence. However, movies on a memory card would be awesome. ZERO MOVING PARTS, absolutely quite, and a lot smaller.

The ability to play DVDs will certainly help. I didn't build a huge DVD library but I'm happy that my imported anime is still able to be played. I only buy blu now, so that certainly wouldn't hurt sales. I can't stand DVD quality anymore

I go with help. Even though I agree that almost everyone won't completely replace their old DVDs, the point compatible or not this was likely to happen. Sometimes movies become dated (irrelevent after some time) other times once the movie is bought people realize they don'tt care about it as much and let's not forget t6hat a movie might just not be considered popular enough for a studio to care to rerelkease it. Did everyone replace all their VHS tapes when they went DVD? No and you can't get any more incompatible. ON the other hand I think the backwards compatability takes away the fear of upgrade. For one it is still and exellent DVD player (worst case scenario) and it also does not make your library obsolete (i.e. I don't need a DVD player connected to my TV, if someones DVD player dies they can buy a BD player and nothing has changed and they can upgrade their movies at their own pace)
