Criterion Dazed and Confused (1993)

Can anyone please speak to the qualitative difference (if any) between the new Criterion Dazed and Confused blu-ray vs. the DVD (2006) version? Is it really worth upgrading and double dipping? I did a quick search of the forum, but only found a discussion about the differences in packaging. What about VQ, AQ, extras? Many Thanks

Assuming you somewhat budget your blu-ray purchases then i think it simply comes down to how much you like the movie.

I'd say that probably 99% of blu-rays are superior to their DVD counterpart, but i'm not exactly rushing out to replace all of my old DVD's.

In this particular case it was a no brainer, since Dazed and Confused is one of my all time favorites and a film i'll revisit on a yearly basis.

Extras are the same as the DVD and the BD appears to based on the same master, if one goes by the comparison shots at DVDBeaver. If you have a big screen (36" or more) you're likely to see the benefit of the higher resolution of the blu-ray. And with respect to double-dipping Criterion DVD's don't drop too much in price for used copies so you can sell yours on ebay.

Great movie, but I can no longer watch it without feeling sad and nostalgic for the glory days of my youth.

It came out the summer after my senior year in high school.

...watching it now only reminds me of the fact that I'm old.

Just randomly saw that the Criterion release is $18.49 on Amazon. However, it is out of stock until next week.

I watched an auction on E-Bay last week for the complete 35 MM film (6 reels) pristine prints that were apparently never screened.

$810 was the price it sold for.

Being one of the biggest fans of Richard Linklater, and this film being his best IMO...I was tempted.

Just happened to be thinking that yesterday marked the 14th anniversary of Criterion's DVD edition of Dazed and Confused. (June 6, 2006) It was a major deal/release back then after Universal's substandard treatment towards the film.

Looks like I'll have to hunt down a copy of a VHS somewhere and find out. I still have a VHS player tucked away in a storage box. I just hope to see a 4K release with some interviews from everyone, hopefully commentary from the cast and possibly any other bonus features that may have surfaced since the Criterion release. I know that's asking a lot, but I guess I can dream, right? It is my all time favorite movie.

"Eat More Possum" was/is a southern slang saying that means, "suck it up and deal with it" or "get on with life", etc. The mid 70s saw economic depression, gasoline shortages, etc... the saying was prevalent during the year this movie is set.

It IS a Southern expression...and one I had never heard before the movie and haven't heard since. Granted, I was three years old in 1976. Still, it's so bizarre that I've lived in the South my entire life and this was new to me.

What more could you possibly want from them? Their current blu-ray is pretty damn excellent.

I'm not sure how anyone could be dissatisfied with their existing blu-ray. Criterion isn't really one to do unecessary 'anniversary' editions -- they already did it right the first time around. You can get it for like $20.

And I own it. Never said I didn't like their current release, but, we are in the times of 4k. Why can't I want the utmost picture quality for one of my favorites?

Sorry, sounded like you were wanting something more from the blu-ray release, which is what's being discussed in this thread. Maybe next time be more clear you're talking about 4k.
