I cannot believe that Henri-Georges Clouzot ripped off Super Mario Brothers. I find it even more amusing that the first responder is called FreakinButtNugget. I wonder if Mario is an homage to The Wages of Fear.

Highly doubt that..... Whoever created the game just rode the "stereotype gravy train" for all it was worth.

Last Year at Marinbad is the first Criterion I've seen that I'm kinda at odds with. Read plenty about it before my purchase so I knew more or less what to expect. I now see why it's so divisive amongst film critics/viewers.

I personally haven't come to a conclusive decision about myself one way or another.

So I place to order for Harakiri along with Eclipse Silent Naruse which I always sort of push back as I was always finding something else I wanted more but now it's now and I have them, plus I doubt any of them will ever make it to Blu-ray so it's not a bad choice for me.

Good choice on the Silent Naruse, Pat! If you've got the Silent Ozu set, it's a great companion...I think you'll like it a lot.

If you're still looking to pad out your order...I'll be picking up my copy of the Eclipse Series 15/Travels with Shimizu set...I'll let you know what I think of it, but from the feedback I've gotten here and descriptions that I've read, it sounds very "Ozu-esque".

So, since the $11.99 deal ended... is it safe to assume maybe it was a mistake? (maybe that other film with the same title was supposed to be discounted instead?).
Either way, really happy I got it. I randomly noticed it at around the same time that Black Friday countdown at the top of the page ended. The 'deal' wasn't listed here or anything, and I was thinking "no way am I seeing that right.."

What score did everyone view it with? I elected to go with the Swedish-composed piece.

i doubt it was a mistake. after all, it is BF. they likely had an 'X' amount to sell at that price and they went fast.

I generally like French film -- I'd put Rules of the Game above Citizen Kane in my little blu-heaven. The only aspect of franco-film that sometimes grates is when a filmmaker creates something that is a little too intellectually sterile (did someone say later Goddard?), and that's how I felt with Lola Montes. OK, the circus acts relate to parts of LM's bio; OK, the frames ultimately conflate. I get that. What else, Max?

I felt mildly annoyed by the end of the film, as though Ophuls had taken a little idea and made a long movie out of it. It's among my least favorite CC blu's. But that's just me. I got annoyed with Slumdog Millionaire for the same reason, and it had more heart than Lola Montes.
